How I Chose My Niche

The last 48 hours has been filled with thoughts about possible niches. There are so many out there, and niches within niches - it can get overwhelming! Selecting my niche has been a stopping point for me in the past, but I'm happy to say that thanks to the community support here at Wealthy Affiliate, I've finally narrowed it down. Here are the steps I followed and questions I asked myself to chose a starting point.

What am I experienced in? What do I enjoy? What am I interested in?

This was a fairly easy list for me to make. I'm a mom of 4 girls, so parenting is definitely something I'm experienced in. I'm also a single parent, so I've faced the struggles that many other single parents have faced. I'm a sole business owner, handling every aspect, so small business management is something I do daily, even down to the books. I was previously married for 12 years, so marriage is something I had a lot of experience with ... and divorce! Not all of these are things I enjoy or think I'd enjoy producing content for though, so I wanted to narrow it down even further. If I can enjoy what I'm doing, it's going to be much easier to succeed.

Is there an area of knowledge I have that not everyone has? Or an area that I know there's a high demand for?

This is what made the process a lot easier for me. One of the businesses I run is a local buy/sell/repair cell phone shop, specializing in iPhone. Two years ago my life changed pretty much overnight and I was in a spot where I needed to suddenly earn an income after 10 years of being a stay-at-home homeschooling mom. An opportunity presented itself within the cell phone industry, so I jumped in, and quickly grew from a local "cell phone flipper" to teaching myself cell phone repair and building a local reputation. (I learned on the fly, and at the same time, realized I LOVE building businesses!) I know from experience that there is a huge demand within the cell phone niche - buying, selling, DIY repair, unlocking, accessories ... the list goes on.

Are there enough affiliate programs within this niche? Are the affiliate programs I'm seeing reputable and profitable?

At this point I got curious about the affiliate programs within this niche so I did a few google searches. Being in the industry, I knew where the money was being made, but did these avenues offer affiliate opportunities? I was able to verify that in my particular niche, every avenue had some sort of affiliate opportunity. My list was still too broad at this point, though.

What's going to be the easiest and fastest to get started?

This is where I've gotten hung up before. There are so many possibilities within my niche, how do I choose where to start? Should I try promoting cell phones as an affiliate? Teach repair and promote tools and parts? Accessories? I had to remind myself ... KEEP IT SIMPLE! There's plenty of time for expanding and perfecting in the future, but based on the research I've done, my knowledge and expertise, and the affiliate programs available, what is going to be the simplest focused niche to get started in? For me the answer is to start promoting iPhone buy and sell sites - which I can tie into my local business and vice versa. I can start here and begin earning affiliate profits, adding and expanding as I go, eventually branching out to YouTube and into other platforms.

Don't forget to ask questions!!!

This was the previously missing piece for me. Within the Wealthy Affiliate community you have access to fellow members who are doing this same thing, succeeding, struggling, fighting through. They will be able to give you an outside perspective and pointers from their own experience. Take advantage of this! It was after asking for feedback on my ideas that I was able to focus on a manageable starting place.

I also plan to promote WA as an affiliate because I know many people who are in need of online income, and another group of people who are experts in their own niche and can benefit others by sharing their knowledge. I hope this post might help someone struggling to find their own niche!

(As a side note, I am not a writer. I'm thankful for the opportunity to "practice" blogging here within the community, and I definitely plan to take some classes on blog writing and improve.

Thanks, you answered my question. Are you building any other websites concerning your experience i.e., parenting, marriage, divorce?

I'm so glad I could help! At the time, I'm only focusing on my niche site, and then I will build a WA affiliate site. For me personally, I like to focus on business sites rather than the more personal topic. I may at some point do something on single parent budgeting, though.

This is a good roadmap for choosing a niche! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jennifer! May your iPhone niche bring you much success. Also, if you promote the WA affiliate, may you be successful in that niche as well. I would have to say that this was a good blog post as you seem like a writer. Anyhow, thanks for sharing.
