Hi, I just resubscribed. Thank you for the offer.
Please, I would like to change my email from the current to another. How do I do that, please?
And is it also possible

Thanks so much, Marion!

This may help too

Wow. Thanks again, Marion, that second link revealed exactly what I need to learn. I've completely forgotten most of the training from years ago! I appreciate you.

Hello everyone! Today being a saturday, I thought I'd fiddle with the home a bit.

Now there's a slider feature in some themes, but no matter what i do, images just won't s

I am curious....did you get what you wanted...I created a website disabledlaidoff.siterubix.com that has a picture slider. I used a plugin for that.....

Alas no, ferns4733; no luck with that, yet. To receive support from developer, I need to join forum. Or pay monthly upkeep. Guess that can wait. I just thought I'd like to familiarize myself with the theme's features. I love your site, btw :-). And thanks so much!

I can't remember the plugin that I used and if you care to have I can find out for you......cheers

Thanks, everyone!

@RICH looked at P3 on my three sites and got rid of the resource pig called Jetpack. It's half the total load time for my sites. The only thing I liked about jetpack were the site stats. Now I want to replace this with something efficient to supplement google analytics.

I tell everyone to get rid of JetPack, it's bug-riddled bloatware, even the "developers" have admitted that. The only reason it survives is because of wordpress.com which it makes constant and unnecessary "calls" to. Avoid!!! Rich.

It's hugely theme dependent. You might find that you have to tick boxes in Screen Options at the top right of the screen when editing a Post. It's sometimes triggered if you add a featured image in the bottom right hand column of a Post. There might be a "feature this post" setting or it could be that a whole new menu option has been implemented, called Slideshow or Feature Gallery, etc. It can often be necessary to set something in Appearance > Theme > Options. It's usually simplest simply to go to the theme developer's website for instructions. :) Rich.

I tried some themes with this option. But they don't work. If you check, many of the themes with this feature will open you to an option to pay for the pro version to upgrade before you can upload images to the slider.

I'd always recommend looking at offerings from dedicated theme developers, such as Woo http://d.pr/CGEg who have free as well as premium themes. Rich.

Oh, thanks for sharing, Rich! This is good to know.

Sliders usually are meant to display your latest posts, say 5 to 10 last ones or posts you want to highlight and feature. And as someone already said it depends on the theme. There may some plugins available to add this function to a theme that does not have a slider feature. Has anyone investigated plugins?

i guess you're right, @Rich, best to head over to developer if every other option fails. Thanks for the tips!

@mikegaudreau I wouldn't recommend "plugging in" a solution. The maxim of the less plugins the better always holds true. :) You definitely want the Home page to load as fast as possible and if the theme has to call a plugin and load images from it you may well find it slows down the initial load time of your site to an unacceptable level. I always recommend installing P3 from GoDaddy to check the overhead of plugins and weed out any resource hogs. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/p3-profiler/ Yup, it's another plugin but you only have to activate it when you're checking your site! Also, there can be other issues with feature, gallery, table, column, etc. plugins, for example if your theme is responsive, they may break that ability. Rich.

Yes @rich that is correct. More plugins may equal chaos. Built in to a theme is the first option. Thanks for the tip on the P3.Shall investigate.

I always thought sliders were generally meant to display pictures rather than posts? Every theme I have ever seen with sliders uses pictures in the demo.

Hi Gary. My theme has a slider and it took me a while to figure out what goes in there. I tried to customize by uploading images but it didn't work. I found out that my posts don't come out in the widgets. They go to the slider.

Strange. I would have thought there was some way to configure it in the settings. I still find a lot of the stuff in WP to be, well, not very intuitive for want of a better way of putting it. I guess it just takes time to get used to it.

That's true, coolcity. It takes a little time to get used to it. But the thing is each theme has different features. That 's why I stopped changing my theme as soon as I got what I wanted. It's time to get to something up and running.

As far as I am aware a gallery is just a collection of static pictures, whereas a slider rotates the pictures.

I have no idea how to adjust the settings or get it to work, sorry.

I believe you're right. This is my thought as well. You could see the slider slides the images automatically whereas you have to click the pictures in a gallery.

Thanks, coolcity! No prob :-)

Hello everyone, may I please ask how to arrange homepage posts such that only excerpts of each page--not full post--show up? I'm trying to locate a setting or button to do that

My reading setting in WP is set to summary, but when I go to my website, the whole post shows, not excerpt. What did I do wrong?

You mean you want excepts to show on the front page. Use a read more function in your post. Choose your blog post, switch to text mode - go to the point where you want the except to end - click on the more button on the top of the editor and hit save. Go back to visual editor and you will see you have a more line. When you look at your front page now. That blog post will only be showing an excerpt.

Yes Beverley, that's what I was asking. So, I should do this with every single post? Edit it individually?.

I don't know which theme you are using, but you may have to.

Hi All. i have tried all the suggestions bellow to show post excerpts, and it all seem to work on the dashboard, but does not show on the post although I have pressed the update. Do i need to activate a certain plugin?

Hi can you show a screenshot of what you mean?

Go to your edit dashboard click on settings and then reading then click on your latest post. I hope this is what you are asking

Tommy

thanks tommydillard! am going to do all suggested tweaks. So glad for all the helping hands.....thanks again, everyone :-)

Possibly the easiest way is to open the edit screen for each post and on the icon bar above the text box is a split icon. It's third from the right. Put your cursor in the text where you want the break to occur and go and click the icon. It will insert a break line, and only the stuff above that line will show on the front page, with a "continue reading" link to click for the whole story.

Wonderful! Appreciate this info, Paul :-). Now am beginning to understand the need to familiarize ourselves with our blog's home--the wp theme we chose. Also, it can get terribly frustrating when you know what you want to achieve, but don't know how to go about it. How grateful I am for this community.....instant answers when you need them. Thanks again, Paul Dean and @Rich!

Hi Paul very easily you have solved my problem. For some days I have been thinking how to split blog post, but I don't get the solution. Now I applied your guidance and seen it is very easy. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Brilliant Paul, I can now go to bed smarter than when I got up. Always good to learn.

That is exactly what helped me!

Glad to know there are folks that can answer that! I sure have a lot to learn!

@Rich, just a follow-up: the Excerpt box isn't in my additional window. Am I missing something perhaps? Thanks!

If you're editing a Post and click on Screen Options it's should be displayed like so http://d.pr/i/3gFv If your theme doesn't support Excerpts in Posts then you might be able to use the WordPress inbuilt Summary function, Settings > Reading then select "For each article in a feed, show..." Rich.

If you edit a Post and click on Screen Options (far top right) and tick the Excerpt box you'll gain an additional window beneath the editor window where you can enter what you want the Excerpt to consist of. :) Rich.

Fantastic @Rich! Thank you so much :-)

Very useful Rich I applied in my blog and it is really fantastic. Thanks

I have done this and filled out the excerpt, but I still get the entire post. I have even selected summary under reading options thinking I needed that. BI S's trick worked to get a summary/excerpt, but I would like to have an image show up to the left or right of the excerpt like in this example.
