The best way to write product reviews

It’s easy to fall into the trap of writing product reviews that read like an instruction manual. By doing this your review will come across as being robotic and impersonal. Not only that, your reader may as well have gone straight to the product page to get very similar information instead.

When people look for reviews they want to read about someone just like them who is having a real world experience using the product.

They want to know about what you really thought was cool about it, or alternatively, what definitely wasn’t cool. If your experiences are genuine and honestly reported, then your review is going to come across as equally genuine and honest.

I have found the best way to report your experiences with a product is to write about them as if you were telling your best mate about it. That way you know you will be using a genuine voice rather than slipping back into instructional mode.

By conveying your genuine feelings you are setting yourself apart from the many mass produced reviews that are focused entirely on keywords and very little else.

Keywords are important, but if you are using your own voice, and reporting a genuine experience of a particular product, then the keywords will come naturally. Search engines know the difference between keywords that are only placed strategically, and those that are there because they need to be in order to convey your message.

Search engines not only pick up on keyword stuffing techniques, they also look out for articles that have hit on a new angle, a new experience, or anything better than what they already have.

In the past search engines have placed more emphasis on reviews from websites that are older and more established, and they may still to some extent favour them if those sites are still producing quality content.

However, if you are writing your reviews using your unique voice and subsequently engaging your readers, then search engines are more likely to favour your review over older sites than they have in the past. Search engines are hungry for personal experiences and something new when it comes to reviews.

The reviews that rank the best on my sites are the ones that are about products I actually use and report my real life experiences. They are also the ones that I tend to update regularly too. That’s not because I think the search engines will be happy if I do update it regularly simply for the sake of it, but because I have discovered something else about the product whilst using it that I want to share.
