Once your website starts to get more and more traffic, the greater the likelihood is that you're going to get comments on some of your posts.

The feeling you get as your first visitor takes the time to create a meaningful comment on your post is unforgettable. By getting comments you know your content is truly engaging, and you can feel very proud of achieving that.

What may take you by surprise however is a comment that reads very negatively.

They can leave you feeling a bit hurt, and make you want to write a defensive reply. However, before you make any kind of knee jerk decision about how you're going to reply, you need to consider the nature of the comment first.

From my experience, there are 2 types of confrontational comments you can get. The first one offers nothing in terms of what the post is about. It doesn't add any value whatsoever, and has been written purely to offend and is abusive.

Those comments I simply delete as they have no place on mine or anyone else's website.

The other type of comment may be a very emotional one, it may even use what you may consider to be inappropriate language. However, despite this, it does nonetheless convey a relevant point, or points.

The commentor may be way off the mark with what they are saying. They may have misunderstood what they have read. But nevertheless, they are raising an issue that is relevant to the post. It may be that you haven't put across the point well enough in the article, and their comment prompts you to make some necessary adjustments.

On the other hand, despite the rude and abrupt way the commentor has put across their point, they may be correct in what they're saying, and have helpfully alerted you to a mistake you have made.

Without a doubt, the 2nd commentor offers much more to you than a bruised ego. They can not only improve your article, or give you an opportunity to emphasise your point more clearly, they also offer you the chance to write a longer and more detailed reply. This is important because word count matters.

My recommendation is that you are always polite in your responses, and never come across as defensive, even if you really want to.

I have seen website owners respond abruptly to negative comments, and it has left me doubting whether they have enough conviction in what they were saying in their article.

Aside from purely abusive comments, any kind of feedback should be welcomed as it offers value.

So when you do get one, feel upset, curse them under your breath, and count to ten.

When you've calmed down, thank the commentor for their opinion, kindly tell them why they're wrong, or show your appreciation for correcting your mistake.

Very well said, Ray! There are spammers here in WA that are starter member and they offer nothing positive whatsoever--they are only here to stir up hatred and resentment and they also inform you that they are only here for their free jaaxy trial! I get a lot of those! I'm glad you posted this, my friend!

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I can’t recall having any negative comments here at WA. My post here addresses the issue of getting negative comments on our websites from visitors who have found us via the search engines.

Good to see you here again my friend.

Ah, I see, Ray! I have had some severely negative ones here, unfortunately! Your advice applies equally here! Enjoy your weekend!

Jeff

You have a good one too Jeff..Thank you

I will, indeed, my friend!
