My Piece of Heaven on Earth

One of the most beautiful places in Kentucky, The Land Between the Lakes (LBL), makes it worth your while to visit. My wife and I drove to the end of Eddyville Ferry Road one day last week. While we were parked beside Lake Barkley, a wild turkey flew up to the top of a tall oak tree to roost for the night. Deer are abundant along with so much other wildlife that one thinks he has returned to nature each time he visits.

It is scenes such as this that brought my wife and me to visit LBL over 40 years ago. Since we moved near here a bit over 17 years, we have enjoyed camping, hiking and biking the almost wild countryside of woods, fields and photogenic views of both Barkley and Kentucky Lakes. LBL lies between these two bodies of water.

In Kentucky there are 110,000 acres of land to explore, camp or hike. A mountain bike-hiking trail runs the length from the northern entrance to the south entrance near U.S. Highway 68 near Fenton, Kentucky. It is called the North South Trail. It ranges from rugged to hilly terrain in the north to more smooth hiking/biking in the south. Portions are accessible from The Trace for those wishing to utilize only a portion of the trail.

  • length: 65 miles
  • rating: moderate to strenuous
  • elevation change: 200 feet
  • see North Trail Map
  • see South Trail Map.

Hunter's Dream

Deer hunting in LBL is permitted with a bow from mid September until near the end of December except during the "quote gun hunts." Check hunter regulations, dates, license requirements and permits with the Administrative Offices at Golden Pond or online by searching for LBL.

Spring and fall turkey hunting is one of my favorites. Spring hunting for wild turkey is first a quota hunt. Then you can hunt for the season length in nearly all of the 110,000 acres in Kentucky. There is a huge population of wild turkey in LBL, and it is challenging to harvest a bird from the woods and fields.

Hardwood forests Abound

Beautiful woodlands abound at LBL. I love the fact that you can walk for hours and hours and never see anything but trees. Small game is everywhere as well, and the buffalo and bison prairie is open to the public. You can buy a token to get through the entrance gate or use your credit/debit card at the entrance to the prairie. I have sat in the middle of a herd of buffalo--cows, bulls and calves--in an S10 Chevy truck unable to move as the herd crossed the road around me. Talking about feeling inadequate!

I'm not on the staff at LBL, nor do I get a commission for publishing this blog. I am merely letting my friends at WA know about a great place to plan their vacation for the next few years. I love it! And, I truly believe you will, too.

Beautiful pictures and beautiful country.

A great piece of heartland America Howard. close to the Mississippi!

So right, Mike. The Ohio River dumps into the Mississippi not too far from the entrance to the LBL area. Thanks, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

A beautiful place indeed.

Thanks, Gail. Yes, I love it here. I was born in the eastern part of the state, and moved here because of LBL. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

I had no idea that I wasn't following you at WA. Can't see how I could have possibly missed you.
