What do you need to focus?

I am reading "Emotional Design" by Donald A. Norman. Coincidentally, it's just after I decided last week to focus on just one website. Norman has some interesting notions about focus, which I didn't expect in a book about design.

I read Norman's book "The psychology of daily things" (1988) years ago and was very enthusiastic about it. In that book he appears to be a follower in "Form Follows Function" and "Less Is More". These are concepts promoted by the Bauhaus, which I am a huge fan of.

So at first, I was amazed that Norman seems to let go of these concepts in "Emotional Design" (2003). This is called progressive insight. :)

He explains that emotion is a much more important component in the experience of design than he first assumed.

And he gives a very interesting example of how that works in practice. (Which finally brings me to 'focus'!)

Creativity versus focus

An attractive design makes someone feel good. And when we feel good, we are better able to make a creative effort. Creativity is a chaotic process. We need creativity for problem solving, to think things through.

But after the creative process we need to concentrate on implementation. And for that we need focus and an environment that doesn't distract us, a low-impulse setting. An aspect that can arise in such an environment is tunnel vision.

That's why in the following stage, when the problem is really urgent, the environment should be the opposite of cosy, warm and pleasurable. The action level should be high then because the circumstances need that, as well as a high focus level.

As an example, Norman described the process in a control room:
1) A meeting where people fool around a bit and tell jokes before brainstorming.
2) The everyday tasks where the light is pleasant and the music soft in the background.
3) The state of alarm, with a howling siren, flashing lights on the panels and the room lights bright and harsh.

Very interesting article indeed. I have not read the book but it sounds interesting. I am trying to work on my focus as we speak, the last couple of days I seem to have lost my focus a bit, but it's coming back. it has to, I got some things that need my focus right now.

At times it is hard, so be it :)
We'll get there eventually, Rose!

Sounds like an interesting book.
I recently read ‘Focus áán-uit’ (Marc Tiggelaar) and he stresses that it is equally important to let your brain rest and wander (as in daydreaming) every day. So don’t feel guilty for the unfocused hours, as long as the time dedicated to work on your website is focused you’re doing great 🤩

Marc Tiggelaar! Thanks, I have listed it on my 'books to read'. I think I have another book of him - have to go searching :)

I am sooo happy to live near a mountain where we can walk each day. But those are indeed useful unfocused hours. The focus I struggled with was the division into working on too many websites. This also made my outbound marketing voice a mess. I am working on it now to get that better. :)

A new set of books to add to my list- by Donald Norman- I wonder which to read first.

On to achieving focused creativity - I figure I need bits of both to succeed 🌞 👍

Exactly, Chris, that is the whole point of Norman: we need all stages in order to function. And if I may make a suggestion: Read the psychology of daily things first. In Dutch it is called (translated) the dictatorship of design, which is a much better title in my view. I have already read that book 3 times and I still love it. It doesn't matter the first publication date is a long time ago. Although I have the impression there is an updated version now. (Hmm, I should buy that one as well, I guess :)

Well Hannie, is that why sometimes I have trouble staying focused. I usually have two dogs laying behind me whining. If I kick them out back, then they are hollowing at the neighbors, or walkers, or UPS, USPS, or Fedex, some commotion.

😂
You got me in the mood for some creative work, Roger, I started this day smiling. Thanks
😘
