A Mother To Remember

No smiling child to press a card into her hand

Or a smile into her heart
The Mother’s Day that could have been
Is all she has to hold inside
No place at any restaurant table
Waits for her
Much less a present filled with love

That child she saw but could not touch
Was torn from her by some well meaning fools
What matter now ?
She clutches on forever
To that memory
That hope that she can not erase
However much she tries

Her special child was lost
By one swift careless twist of fate
And yet lives on inside her soul
She sits with tears upon her breast
Hidden by curtains of despair
And dreams in secret
Of that wondrous day
When motherhood returns
As well it may
