Babe Eat Your Heart Out

I have been having an animals we have known conversation with one of my WA friends. The latest topic was about my little cattle station friend who showed the most tenacious nature and sure set an example that you can do anything you want. That is as long as you have the right attitude and lots of perseverance. I thought everyone might get a bit of enjoyment out of this tale so decided to post it here.

Well, when I was on the cattle station in Queensland, Australia somehow I got looking after all the 'orphan' piglets. Either mum rejected them or there was just too many of them. Feeding time at the old pig corral was sow down for a snooze, piglet pile on. Don't worry if it's is your mum or not, it was open house smorgasbord!

Our pigs were only shut in the sty at night. During the day they wandered around the paddocks. So none of these little orphans were segregated I just made sure they got something to eat at milk time. One little fellow decided I was a good bet to be around. It didn't matter what we did to contain him at night. In the morning he was asleep under my bed.

I don't know if you have heard of a 'Queenslander'. It is a house on piles with a open veranda all around, generally with blinds that can be shut against rain and open in dry to let what ever breeze there was, through the house. So no obstacle to a little piglet.

It didn't matter where I went he followed. So the amenities were in an outdoor concrete block building (and that was the only coolish spot in the very hot weather). The picture is he took a shower with me (he must have been the cleanest pig in the bush - and town for that matter).

When I used the toilet I had to put my feet up the wall as he sucked on my toes. This isn't nice as piglets are born with very sharp little teeth. Poor mums!

When he got bigger he had to struggle to get under the small gap below the door. Therefore as he grew everyone knew when I was in the loo (WC) as he let out enormously loud squeals until he got in.

So as you can see he really did follow me everywhere.

One day we were sorting out the cattle herd to separate the ones going to market. All of a sudden there was a great roar of laughter behind me. My lovely horse and I were cutting out a cow and calf to send to the 'safe' corral at that time.

I looked to see what they were on about and there was little piggy following me. The cow took one look, turned back in astonishment from her head-long dash in the wrong direction and went exactly where I wanted her to go. Babe eat your heart out.

What most people don't know is that pigs are really smart animals. And if housed right they don't smell bad. This is why no-one ever knew when he was in the house! They just have a reasonable odour as do most animals. They would rather roll in muddy water not their own filth like they are often forced to do. And some of them really believe they are people!

So you see the movie Babe wasn't so far out anyway.

Looking after a couple of kune kune's called porky and poky they are the hardest shots personality plus and very clever to boot. So agree with you, Helen.

Kunekunes hey, fat and round. Apparently they can have 'piri piri'. The only pp I know is a lovely hot chilli. At least they don't have dags they can go out and rattle! I lived in NZ for a year way back when. The first expression I heard from a new NZ friend was when she said 'let's go out and rattle our dags'. So now every time I go out I have this cartoon of a ewe walking on two legs and shaking her butt!

And I agree re personality wise.

That is awesome Helen not much is changed we can be off the wall, They are really good value for sure.

Beautiful story Helen, growing up in the Australian country is never dull. I grew up on an Appaloosa Horse Stud in Tassie and boy I could tell you some stories. LOL
Cheers Tracy :)

OK Tracy I am waiting. I take you are not down here anymore.

Oh yes, still here in Tassie but just not on the Stud anymore. We Apparently he had escaped a couple of mile up the road from a hobby farm. We ended up keeping him and even though there is an old wives tale about horses not liking pigs very much, our horses loved him. His name was Porkstar Pig. :)

Love your story Helen, intelligent little pig. I've a hen following me in the ktichen, only lays her egg on the cabinet. Sometimes she is a real nuisance whne she has to lay her egg, . apparently that is a serious business!

Marion, at least you don't have to go outside to get your brekkie egg!

That is so true but i have to be quick, it ends on the floor sometimes

Great Story. My mom had a piglet that lived with her inside for a bit as well. I don't remember why. Thank you so much for sharing.

I remember going to a James Taylor concert many years ago. He got to telling us of his pet pig. He thought he would get a piglet, feed it up and eat it. At the time of the concert the sow was 7 years old and had her own couch in front of the TV!

Oh that is too funny! I wonder how big she was?

Nice Story Helen!

You're welcome Perry. It is certainly true that the best and funniest stories are usually real.

Thanks Helen,
For this lovely post, I never knew pigs were born with teeth.
There's always something new to learn

I didn't either until I ended up literally with pins and needles in my toe!

Hi Helen,
You'll have a life time friend with that little piggy. Wonderful story! Have a good evening.

Unfortunately as this was a working station and I had left by the time he went to market. I didn't have any way to keep him. But at least he got spoiled in his short life.

like your story. thanks, dear

Thanks Mike. He certainly was a character.

What a wonderful story Helen ! Our youngest grandson just read it and LOVED it !

Well I must say all my family and friend enjoyed my cattle station saga. I sent them monthly updates like this.

Lovely story Helen :)

You are right Jude. That certainly was an interesting period of my life.
