A beautiful 'town' and countryside to live in

In the years 1999 and 2000 the temperature where we lived in northern New South Wales, Australia rose to very high levels. In fact in 2000 we had two weeks of 46 degrees Celsius. The candles collapsed into rather suggestive shapes (use your imagination) and the corks were pushing their way out of the wine bottles. The only thing keeping them in was the foil around the corks!

At night the temperature only dropped into the late 30s inside the house and we often took a beach towel outside and slept on the lawn. This was quite an adventure, trying to identify what was crawling over us each night! Fortunately this was too hot for even the snakes to be active. (We had some wonderful pythons up there - and poisonous ones too!)

At that point we decided to save ourselves, our cats, our candles and especially the wine and move down to Tasmania. Fortunately for me, the government department had another round of redundancies going around in early 2001 and I applied. In spite of being told I was too valuable (ie I was helpful and willing to tackle anything) to obtain one I did succeed. Apparently they were going on numbers and lots of use 'extremely valuable' persons were successful with out applications.

So off we set on our new life.

We had bought land in southern Tasmania. In fact if you drive 1 1/2 to 2 hours south you can't go any further south. You have reached the Great Southern Ocean. Next stop Antarctica!

Our nearest city, 'town' as Tasmanians call it, is Hobart.

This morning an ex work colleague FaceBooked me the video shown at the following link.

Now I don't know about everyone else but I love to see new (and old to reminisce) places so I thought I would pass it on so you can see our lovely 'town'.

Along with this I have attached some images from the journey to and fro the 'town' to our humble area of abode.

The Huon River from our house.

Sleeping Beauty on the way north to 'town'.

Looks beautiful :)

It is beautiful and pretty wild too. We went out on the Bruny Island Tour boat the first time the boat was out after three weeks of wild weather. Just in case you ever come to visit here is their link. https://www.brunycruises.com.au/

This goes out into the Great Southern Ocean to the 'seal' rock islets (called the Friars) - males only. I attached a photo of them. You may not be able to open this view; I can't seem to get this to work at this point in time. But the link has photos of them.

Oh, WOW!!! I'd love to visit the beautiful place. Thanks for sharing, Helen!

Betcha you would be welcome anytime. I better keep in touch with you now so we don't lose touch.

Thanks, Helen! Please feel free to keep in touch! Take care and have a wonderful WA journey!

What wonderful scenery! I've always wanted to be as close to nature as possible and leave the cityscape.

The nice thing is we are only 45 minutes drive south of Hobart. And the scenery is like this all the way. The last 15 km is beside the river shown in the first photo.

Nice post thanks dear

You are welcome M. (Now that sounds like something from James Bond!)

Love it

I love Tasmania! I am from Western Australia, and love it here too, but it does get very hot in Perth, so love my visits to Tasmania!
I can imagine you sitting outside on your laptop on WA working along with the vision of the Huon River in fron t of you!
Nice!

I haven't got a laptop. I don't like how small they are! I do however on nice days sit on the veranda overlooking that view. Now Perth is hot but I love the south west. I spent a few months in Albany in the dim distant past. I explored from Esperance and right around the coast right back up to Perth. My friends and I had a great time. I even climbed the Gloucester tree. I ended up with a huge cramp in one leg as I kept leading with it as I climbed and descended. So other than the great view my fondest memory is of pain!

Oh Dear about the leg, but the South West is beautiful! I lived in Denmark, which is 50klms from Albany and will be returning there to live in 2 years time! Beautiful countryside!

Great article Helen, love the pics and the interesting video.
Great place to live, I'm never going to leave!

Helen your place looks amazing. I loved the video. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing Helen!

Wonderful pics.

A pretty place you live in, Helen. Shame it gets so cold. After spending a year in Asia, I am struggling a little with the colder temps here in Brisbane, let alone what you are getting down there. Hope you survived the wild weather last week.
Duncan

If you think Brisbane is cold you better only visit Tasmania in the middle of summer!

Oh yes, that is my intention. The last time I was there was in December of 1991.
