The Importance of Understanding Your Audience

Do you know the importance of understanding your audience? When I started in the SAC, I thought I had it cracked. I thought I was pretty comfortable with the audience I had chosen, following Kyle's tutorial and creating an 'avatar'. I went off to check Jay out too... knew he had done a webinar about audiences and how to target.... Got info from Google too... so I thought I had got my audience sussed..... POW !!! Nailed it !....

Only I was blowing my own trumpet a little too early... Whilst I had the avatar off to a big whopping 'T', I did not understand really how to apply it to my writing.. Sure I know all about looking at online work from their point of view, so what do they know, what don't they know, and writing about all those sorts of things... I got all that, but why answer questions about whether my avatar had a family, or how old they were or where they go on holiday, what pet they have or whether they live in the city or the countryside.

So I have been spending some time thinking about it, asking a few questions in WA and PM a member or two to try and understand more about how I can use this information. I also joined a few facebook groups within my avatar demographic to understand more their need for online work and what they get up to in their spare time. I think I probably got a bit bogged down with this. I think I got stuck in a few rabbit warrens, going back and forth with various ideas. I wasted a fair bit of time, but still produced a few articles.

I had great advice from a couple of WA members, so thankyou to them for the very helpful advice they gave me in understanding more clearly where my focus should be. Not that I have left those ideas, but have realised that I have to bear in mind the other generalised information they need too. Sometimes I get stuck down rabbit holes and can't dig myself out and overthink things. I think because I so want this to work, Im putting my heart and soul into this website, I desperately want to make sure I don't miss out something I should be including.

I have had some referrals, none that have gone premium and interestingly not from my target audience. I hope that isn't a concern?? Its month 3 but I don't expect anything yet.

I will keep on working. Away in Macedonia right now, another hotel room and tennis centre. Internet is again iffy, but coping ! We have Morocco, Spain (yay we will be able to stay home for this one) and Canada on the list running up to December. Maybe I can meet Kyle or Jay!!

So happy weekend wherever this finds you !

I can relate very well to your experience.

Yet, I do believe that it is important to understand our avatars. Yet, if you are getting referrals from a group that you haven't targeted; maybe those people have even more of a need for help that the group your were targeting?

I truly believe that we have to be a bit flexible in business in order to best serve our customers.

I hope that you have a great weekend.
