How Emails Can Actually Harm Your Authority Online

Do you get put off by just the appearance of an email?

I got this email this morning... now somewhere along the line, I have subscribed to something that then generates weekly emails about various nutritional issues.... No idea when i did this and to be honest, I will be unsubscribing..

There are a few reasons why I will be doing this. The first is, and this has no reasoning behind it at all, but I don't like the logo.

Then the next is, and this goes along with the content of the email..... I do not like the tagline.

It says 'investigating nutrition, health and fitness to keep you youthful, healthy and fit !

So they want to keep me healthy and fit.... but then the first piece of news is about why we shouldnt drink cold water ! Really!! Scaremongering...

I know that drinking cold water in EXCESS when you have exercised is not a good idea, it can create vasovagal syncope and unconsiousness due to the rapid reduction in blood pressure and heart rate. This is a very unusual reaction and one that most of us will never have anyway.

Now I know why it was done... to get a reaction.. to create interest and bring in more readers. But I think it is a very cheap trick, dangerous and really for a supposedly respected website, trying to build a good reputation online, a really bad move.

Whilst I know that we all want to increase traffic to our websites, I think this is a step too far.

It might get some to click through and read the article, then start them worrying because they dont know any better and they think they can trust the website.

The email goes on to talk about carb pairing and dropping 22lbs in 2 weeks for women.... Really ????

Why is it that we all don't know this? If this was the case then we would all be thin and doctors would be curing obesity. It would be big news!

I feel that having read this, it makes my trust and belief in this website's tag line cannot be believed, how can, if it were actually possible, losing 22lbs in 2 weeks be good for your health?

And after this, how can I believe anything this website has to say?

I just wanted to highlight this, that whilst we all want to encourage traffic, by sending out a poorly thought through email with information that is contradictory or not based in fact and sensationalist.... makes you look stupid, being a bottom feeder and picking off those that are not as well educated or more easily persuaded to believe things.

This will harm your presence online, not help.

Cannot agree more with you Helen. Great advice:))

So true Helen, thank you for sharing. I get some of those and it is frustrating because I don't remember subscribing. I am glad I am not alone in my beliefs.
Thanks again
Ray

It just goes to show being the reader and looking at it from a customer standpoint? really works, in fact I was reading a post the other day, saying exactly that

I guess it is easy to make a sensational headline, but just like we don’t trust the “red top” tabloids, eg “my mother has come back to life as a cow” (yes that was a real one) we won’t trust the content of this email and latterly website.

I think this is a really good post and will make you think twice about how and what you say....

Thank you so much for sharing
👍

22 lbs in 2 weeks!! Sign me up!! LOL

I'm with you on this... these guys are dangerous! Coldwater while working out?! Oh Nay, Nay!!

I have been going through my 'Junk Email' and unsubscribing to a number of things as well!!

Shaunna

Got to agree to the chucking out ... got to do it myself and this came to my regular email 😱

We must be careful of what we put in emails Helen. We need to keep our contacts with us and not against us.

Derek

Absolutely.. !

This is a great reminder Helen. Unfortunately they will still get read and still get traffic. In the same way that the 'tabloid' papers still have a loyal following and of course we all believe what we read in the paper.

Very true... It's a shame, its how so many end up in the mess they do, because there are charlatans out there that perpetuate rubbish.

A great point and we’ll written post!
Thank you for sharing,

Cora

thanks Cora
