What sort of movie are you creating?

How's the movie of your life turning out? Is it a B Grade re-run or the next action packed blockbuster?

After reading a few posts on goal setting and having to reassess my goals for the remainder of the year I wanted to add a short blog on another way to accelerate achieving your goals once you have set them.

Visualisation

OK I know it sounds all new age and airy fairy but hang in there with me, there is scientific evidence to suggest this actually works.

Athletes have been using this method for ages, but it’s not just to achieve physical goals it can be applied to any endeavour you wish to achieve.

There are two types – Outcome Visualisation and Process Visualisation and you will need both.

Both involve creating a vivid, detailed mental image of what it is you wish to achieve – a virtual movie if you will.

You need to be specific and use all your senses to create the movie. It needs to be so engaging that you can fully immerse yourself in the story with you as the main character.

Outcome Visualisation

This is envisioning yourself achieving the goal.

Let's take our websites as an example. You have set your goal to achieve a $1000 month, you’ve been SMART in setting your goal, it is:

  • • Specific
  • • Measureable
  • • Attainable
  • • Relevant
  • • Time-bound

Your visualisation of achieving your $1000 month might go like this – you see yourself sitting at your desk, laptop open in front of you.

You are comfortable, nice and warm and you can smell the freshly brewed coffee from your cup sitting off to the side.

You open your PayPal account and there it is, in black and white $1000 in your account.

Can you visualise the screen, the exact layout, the colours? If not open your PayPal account and have a look. Feel your excitement, the sense of satisfaction to know all your hard work has payed off.

You will notice every action or sensation is in the present tense, you need to feel it now as if you were watching the movie unfold before you.

Process Visualisation

This is breaking down the nuts and bolts of how you get to your goal, the step by step process of achieving.

Again using our websites as an example to get to the $1000 month you might need to create fantastic content.

Visualise yourself writing easily, the content is engaging and flowing effortlessly onto the screen. The images are all found easily and fit just perfectly with your content. Feel the keyboard under your finger tips, experience the emotion of being fully engaged in a task you do well.

Then you hit the publish button and view your live post in all its glory – it’s a masterpiece and you couldn’t be happier.

What Have You Got To Lose

I like to visualise before I get up in the morning. I set my alarm for 15 minutes earlier, hit the snooze button just in case I go back to sleep, and start visualising which ever goal I am working on at the time.

I start with a blank screen and project my perfect movie onto the screen, in colour, with sound and feeling.

What movies are you creating for yourself and your life?

Why not give visualisation a go, if you aren’t already, and see if it makes a difference for you.

I agree visualizing is impotant. We can also add to that the emotions that go with visualization. How does it make you feel. To be enthusiastic you must act enthusiastic!

Fake it till you make it! I agree absolutely JudsonH. I use to sell real estate in a former life a long time ago, and they taught us that very early on.

If you do not believe and act accordingly how can you expect anyone else too see you in the same light. And the mere act of being enthusiastic and confident does affect our whole attitude.

Great Blog!

It's also something ballerina' s do (I was one), rehearsing steps so many times, the first thing you hear when you dance is the first note of the music, then your mind takes over. The next thing you realize is the last note and the applause! It becomes "natural", a part of you.
It's also something I helped my Trapshooter husband with when he was having trouble with focus. I had him walk through the shot process, from putting the gun together, walking to the line, shouldering the gun, calling for the bird, and "smoking" the shot. He did it so many times in his head that when I watch him shoot now, I can almost "hear" his brain visualizing the shot. AND as you say, it works!

To get a good outcome, like you said, you need to "walk it through" in your head - visualize......It may not work immediately, but the "rehearsal" can get you there!

Nice job Heidi!

Laurel

Thanks Laurel, yes it really does work.

I remembered that I use to do it a lot when I was in sales, and I resurrected the practice when I inherited a somewhat difficult horse.

I see us moving together as one and that is now what I expect when we ride, and mostly he comes with me now LOL.

I am rebuilding my lens so I can focus better.
Jerry

Once you have the focus this will turbo charge your progress Jerry, of that I am sure.

Your post, Heidi, takes me back to my college days. I did not use visualization as you describe it. I used an A4 sheet and demarcated it into as many squares as the days of the month. In each square I wrote in very small script, what I had to do for that day. What was not accomplished for that day, was taken over to the next. This instilled discipline, planning and, I guess, some visualization.

The result: II finished that degree in three instead of four. Now, I am game for practicing your version fo visualization.

Awesomeness!
Mojalefa.

Practice away Mojalefa, it's actually quite good fun and can set you up for a fantastic day and a fantastic life.

I love the movie-making analogy! It's very relatable and easy to understand. Great blog :)

Thanks Jess, sometimes it is hard to put these concepts into words that A) people want to read and B) make sense.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Made plenty of sense to this film buff XD.

Thanks for this great blog. Love the idea of creating our own movie.
Debbie

It's quite a bit of fun once you get the hang of it Debbie.

And you can change it any time you like, no more boring repeats!

Love this. I do the same thing with my riding.
Sydney

Me too Sydney, and it works so well.

Unfortunately my instructor is some 7 hours from me, so I have to ride without eyes on the ground most of the time. I think visualisation has helped me move ahead far more than I would have without it.

I did an online course for mental skills in riding years ago and I still refer back to it.

Love the message. Hoping I can let loose anything I think I have to lose.

Thanks for the spell check :) Now your comment doesn't make sense LOL. Sorry about that, but I do appreciate it.

Hah! Awesome. Just like you!

Good tips worth trying!

I learnt this when I was in sales, selling advertising into a small magazine.

It was tough going for a while until I started to visualise how many ads I wanted to sell each day, how the customers would love the product and how easy it was to sell - it changed the whole dynamic of how I approached people and turned my sales around.

It continues to work for me when I work it :)
