What Is Online Personal Branding?

Well for a start it's not as painful as the feature image, and it is something all of us at WA need to be considering. But why?

This is an area I have been interested in since starting my online business, I've started researching for my article on my Bootcamp site and thought I'd share some of what I am learning.

Even if you don't know it you already have an online personal brand.

Everything you or others have ever posted on any social media has and is contributing to your personal brand right now.

If this thought horrifies you, maybe you had a misspent youth as I may have (yeah alright I did) there is even more incentive to get cracking on developing the personal brand you DO want.

If you are squeaky clean and think there will be nothing 'out there' then you have a wonderful clean slate to commence branding yourself.

I have been watching and reading quite a lot of motivational and online business success blogs lately. Personal development and growth have always been an interest of mine.

The way you are perceived through searches, photos, news articles etc. all easily available online, can make or break your career success. If you are serious about building an online business that makes a bit of extra pocket money or an affiliate marketing empire, you need to take control of how you are seen on the internet.

Step 1 - Be your Authentic Self

What makes you unique? What is it about you that is different to everyone else? What makes you .. you? What are your inherent strengths?

Are you empathetic? Do you have a history of trauma or a defining event that has shaped your life and made you stronger? Do you have never ending patience? Are you a flamboyant extrovert or a wall flower introvert?

Set aside some time and think about who you really are. This can not be overstated, because it is impossible to build a brand on something that you are not.

Our followers are super savvy these days and they know when your faking it.

It is near on impossible to maintain a false persona. At the very least it's draining and at the very worst it will come back to bite you in the long run when you are exposed as a fraud.

Imagine you spend the next few years developing your personal brand as The Gourmet Granny, you get so popular that you start getting asked to attend speaking engagements.

I don't think it's going to go down to well when an 18 year old punk rocker walks out on stage! Keep it real people.

Be authentic, this is an opportunity to be your true self. Have a good think about it, write down all the things that make you you. Don't edit your list, just write what comes to you.

If you are having trouble coming up with ideas ask someone close to you that you trust.

These ideas don't need to always be sunshine and rainbows. You might be able to work with - disorganised, confused, nerdy. You get my drift.

Step 2 - Find a Handle

I have been finding it easiest to try to think of a handle that might suit.

The food industry comes to mind for me - the Naked Chef (Jamie Oliver), the Barefoot Contessa (Ina Garten), the Domestic Goddess (Nigella Lawson), the list goes on.

I'm thinking to start with it should be something relative to your niche.

We all now it's important to think small when it comes to niches and I think the same applies to your online brand.

You can always branch out later as you grow and your businesses expand and deviates but these people all made their names in food, it is what they are synonymous for and we all know them for it.

You may not choose to actually promote your handle, but I am finding it is helping me narrow down what I want to be known for.

Step 3 - Use It

As I said you may not actually use the exact words of your handle once you have decided, but consider how you will portray yourself moving forward. In signatures, with colours, the language you use, suitable images.

Everything you connect with your name should be in keeping with your personal brand so as not to cause disharmony and to keep your brand consistent and reliable.

What will you choose?

So what have I chosen as my handle? I haven't yet.

It is an important decision which will hopefully be with me for quite some time, I want to let it ruminate, so while I do some more research on personal branding I'm letting my subconscious play with a few ideas.

I'm sure something will feel right in the days or weeks to come.

A thought provoking post, Heidi!

This morning I did one of those Facebook quizzes. This one was "Which movie horse reflects your inner self?" I was surprised and pleased to discover that I'm like Black Beauty.

This is kind of silly, but it has gotten me thinking about how others perceive me, and, thus how I am "branding" myself on line without even realizing it.

Thanks for your insights. They are very timely.

Ohh I love those quizzes, they are a bit of silly fun, and can be thought provoking. And yes we are branding ourselves every day either consciously or without thought, but it is happening with every blog and every comment.

Better to put some thought into it I reckon, and sooner rather than later.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Most appreciated.

Hi, Heidi.
Paul Mindra here from Ontario, Canada.

Nice post, good read.

I was on a particular lesson here to set-up Social media accounts.
All went well until one of the the accounts...Google + all of a sudden indicated that I was 'stealing the identity' of another. My access is under review.

I'm sure all things will be resolved after back and forth nonsense.

My point is...Are these social networks that try to tie in all information about you into one 'sacred' area that they control, worth it?

I actually have a problem with this. I am forced to provide information that correctly connects me with other social sites. If the information is 'slightly' off even due to human error, I am suspended.

This is completely wrong in my opinion.

Personally, I believe that the only thing that I need to be successful online is my real estate...i.e. my website(s).

I have a decision to make regarding 'Social Media.' Right now, I think that I am going to pass. Social Media provided by the the 'Top 5' is in my opinion a ' not so trust worthy option.'

You give them everything...what do they give you in return?
"Sorry, you have violated our terms so your account has been suspended.."

I signed up for various Social Media accounts but I think that I am not going to go in that direction.

Great post Heidi.

Thank you.

Paul from Canada.

I am sorry to read about your troubles with Google +. They do make things sound quite ominous!

I really do think the social media space is beneficial to our successes. It is the cheapest, easiest way to get eyes on your blog and to position yourself as an expert in your niche.

I hope it all gets resolved for you soon, but please do consider using social media. It is important. Even if you start with one and just concentrate on that and build your brand and reputation in the one sphere.

I look forward to reading how you go with G+.

Hi, Heidi.
Thank you for your very thoughtful comment.

I'm still awaiting the outcome from Google+.

Yes, I will use social media as I do realize the importance.

Everything will work out.

I wish you a fabulous day.

Paul.

A most thoughtful and interesting post.

Why thank you Stuart. I trust you are going well.

Tremendous info to reflect on and consider. I have copied and pasted here some quotes from your post above just to remind me of these points which I found really stood out and to remind me to seriously consider. Hope you don't mind. The key points for me were:
"Be authentic, this is an opportunity to be your true self. Have a good think about it, write down all the things that make you, you"

Glad to be of help Alan, copy and paste all you like. I have found I need to be in a certain type of mood to be able to really brainstorm it, I have sat there for half an hour and come up with nothing when I started, but it seems to be flowing a little easier now.

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

A great way to brain storm. To take inventory as you research to find your voice. As Shakespeare said, “to thine own self be true.” In the this you will find your direction to go.

Good old "wobble stick"(Shakes Spear) he did have some great quotes. Thanks for the comment.

This blog is a good read for me.

I believe You are your brand.

So finding what is unique with you and honing on it might shape up to make you stand out of the noise.

Easier said than done.

There is a lot of noise that's for sure Anusuya. I am going to take my time and hopefully come up with something which does really represent my uniqueness, it is often a tough one to pinpoint for many people, and I am no exception.

It is easy to say Oh I'm just average, or the same as everyone else. It takes a bit of thought to really identify what makes you unique. But I feel we all have it, we just need to determine what it is.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Branding is so important. Jolly Green Giant knows exactly what you are saying.

Your post rock, Heidi.

thank you!

frank =)

Ahhh yes a good one Frank. It's really so important to get on the front foot with these types of things.

Wow very good post! Now I have handle names running thru my head. Thank you for your brand insight!

You are very welcome, I am enjoying researching this topic and sharing what I learn. Yep I'm thinking about handles now too lol.

We have one in the horse world - "Galloping Housewives". It's meaning is a bit derogatory, it refers to women of a certain age who have no idea what they are doing on a horse but have plenty of money and time to do it badly :)

I think we can come up with some positive ones!

Thank you for this insight.I believe confidence is very important as well, if you are not confident in what you are saying it to will shine through.
Thx again, keep them coming

I agree wholeheartedly Mark, I know when I write if I am not only passionate about the content but confident it flows better and seems to make more sense. Love those articles where you don't have to do extensive research, they go a lot faster.

Best wishes to you and thanks for commenting.

Enjoyed this thanks for sharing.
Blessings

Thanks Elaine or Scarlett, glad you enjoyed it. I'm enjoying learning about it
