Keyword Research - Am I Doing it Wrong?

So I was going to ask this as a question but couldn't work out how to add images.

Here's my dilemma. See the keyword results below:

Now the way I'm sure I did the training is the more traffic and the lower the QSR the better - right?

For newbie sites definitely under 100 QSR (competing sites) and as close to 0 as possible and traffic over 100 is great but as long as it's got some traffic all good.

So why in the above example would the 2nd keyword rank higher at 96 in the SEO column with 96 competing webistes and only 80 traffic but the one above which has zero competing websites and 136 traffic only have SEO of 93.

And further why would the two bottom ones have the same SEO at 96 when one has 96 competing websites and the second only 15 but with more traffic? Surely the 3rd keyword is much better than the 2nd?

For my money I'd be choosing the top keyword - yes?
Or what am I missing here and have I been doing my keyword research incorrectly for the past 10 months!

I feel like I could massage both the top 2 keywords to make a decent title and use it within the first 100 words of the blog so the grammar shouldn't be an influencing factor as to why they would rank for SEO differently.

Feeling confused so any help from those in the know would be greatly appreciated.

Note: By the way feel free to use these keywords if you think they are any good, I'm not, it's just one of many examples I have come across.

Is the trick with the keywords to coninually use that keyword in your post? Because I’ve been using it for the title and then building the article around that but not necessarily using the same keyword again. Help would be appreciated as I can see from this post it’s a confusing topic

Definitely don’t keep using it throughout your post. In the title and then once within the first 100 words is enough. Otherwise Google will see it as keyword stuffing. Just write your post naturally and some phrases relevant to the topic will of course occur.

OK Heidi, I have made this quite confusing to the point of wanting to give up. I finally decided to go with over 100 and under 100. But to choose the lowest under 100 that I can as in #1 of your searches.

So to simplify it. Go with your gut and don’t second guess yourself. Keep writing and some will rank and some won’t. Then one day you will happen on a post that will bust it all open.

What do you think?

Laura

Hi Laura yes absolutely agree. I am just going to take a step back, breath a little and go with my gut. All this over analysing is doing my head in.

I figure it's just as easy to write a blog that's not going to rank as one that will, but I really am having a hard time getting anything to rank for my Bootcamp site so was starting to wonder if I just had keywords all wrong.

It looks like I don't so I'm going on my merry way :)

Thanks for your comment.

My posts on WA do not rank as well either. I think it is because no matter what keyword I choose the market is saturated. Which takes us back to the content side.

Many many posts equal ranking and referrals.

so keep writing and one day it will be there. It only takes one good post to break it wide open.

Hello, going by the keyword results shown in the screenshot above, you're well on your way to getting ranked on time. The metrics are well-considered for low competition keywords and this is basically what Kyle taught in the training. Ambassador Marley also commented below in reference to Google searches and the competition out there. Please, refer to this too and you'll rock your blog. Wish you success in multiple folds!

Israel Olatunji

Thanks Israel, I have always stuck with what Kyle teaches but was beginning to wonder if I had it wrong with the results Jaaxy was bringing up.

I'm putting it down to I have a more human brain so I'm going with my human instincts LOL.

Definitely the 1st one Heidi- it's a winner even if you are not using it
It is a really great keyword to use
Vicki

Thanks for the confirmation Vicki, I know I can sometimes overcomplicate things and I think by doing too much analysis I have done just that. I was starting to do it with every keyword search and thoroughly confusing the issue.

All settled - I would go with #1, that's what I would always do so that's what I shall continue doing. Thanks again.

perfect Heidi - indexing and ranking will be your friend

Heidi,
Here is what I am finding and how I would proceed:
Make Money Online Affiliate Marketing Techniques
Avg. 136 Traffic 24 QSR 0 Great SEO 93
Google shows 35,100,100 websites with this exact search

Making Money Online Affiliate Marketing
Avg. 313 Traffic 54 QSR 137 Great SEO 92
Google shows 60,600,000 websites with this exact search

Make Money Online Blog Marketing
Avg. 136 Traffic 24 QSR 15 Great SEO 96
Google shows 446,000,000 websites with this exact search

Looking at this which would be the easiest to rank in the
first place on the front page?
In my opinion, it would be the first keyword phrase you looked
at and the reason is look at the average and traffic both good
along with no competition websites great SEO and remember
you can rank with the other keywords in possible a lower
position under the second keyword phrase :)

I do hope this makes things clearer for you.
Susan

how are you getting those google figures>?

Adam,
By putting in the exact keyword phrase that Heidi has on Jaaxy.

Thanks Susan I would have chosen the 1st one from my training and from having done the allintitle google search just interesting that Jaaxy doesn’t rank it as the best option.

Heidi - this is how I did my training that I put out on Jaaxy -
I find that using the two together helps me find better
keywords and keyword phrases :)
Thanks for sharing.
Susan

Heidi,
Take those first three you have and bring them up in Google -
see how many competing websites you come up with for
each one and record them then come back to here and let me
know.
Susan

See below Susan I did that, results get even more complicated

Heidi,
I use that as a base then those sites show up but not with the exact keyword order as in Jaaxy if you are really looking at
them they are showing up as using those keyword phrases in
the content somewhere right:)
So what I base mine on is the number of websites with the least
amount of competition - I have seen them in the billions can you
imagine competing with those :)
Susan

So when I go back and do a search with the 1st keyword in Jaaxy I get this - see attached image. No traffic, no websites and an SEO of 85 as you would expect.

So which one is correct because that changes everything?

If I do an allintitle Google search the 1st keyword has 110 competing sites. That's a little different to 0.

allintitle result for 2nd keyword: 2610
allintitle result for 3rd keyword: 1100

Excellent now I am even more confused! Clear as mud yes?

In the top 10 sites for each keyword there are not many authority sites, looks like plenty of smaller affiliate sites, which would indicate there was room to move and maybe get a spot on Page 1.

If I do the Keyword Golden Ratio on all of them then the 1st keyword comes out on top - but doesn't quite meet the guidelines to use it (not less than .25 if you use traffic as 136 it's .80 so still OK), the last two are pretty much useless but 3rd is next best and the 2nd is the worst option.

OK I think I am just confusing myself even more now!

Yes, that is confusing when it happens. The zero may be some sort of error that gets picked up from time to time. Overall, keyword searches are a tool, one that may not always work properly.

Somewhere along the way it seems like I heard that quality of the websites existing that you would be competing against will affect the SEO rating. The third one might have only 13 websites but those 13 may be outstanding sites with have much more authority than the 96 websites shown on line above.

For example if your keyword was senior horse feed, those 13 sites might include Purina and Nutrina (the two biggest horse feed manufacturers in the US). On a different search, you might have more websites that you are competing against that are not industry leaders.

Heidi,
I use Jaaxy all the time for my keyword research but once I pick
the phrases there I also go on Google and take a look to see how many websites show up with that keyword phrase - not sure
but what I am finding is using the exact phrase for a title keyword phrase is the best because when entered I am not getting any websites with those exact title words coming up but instead many different variations - does this make sense for you :)
Susan

What a good idea! Never thought of that, Susan.

Say In Range 50 to 150
