Why would people write comments on blogposts?

I am really wondering about the comments I get on my website. I am moderating one by one and more often than not I decide to mark them as SPAM.

Just to give you an example: In one of my websites I had posted a video almost 2 years ago (http://thepowerofrelationship.com/wisdom_factory/c...) with only one sentence as introduction. Now I get 5 or 6 comments in a row which don't really relate to the content. for example:

"I am curious to find out what blog system you happen to be utilizing? I’m experiencing some minor security issues with my latest site and I would like to find something more safe. Do you have any solutions?"

or

"Ahaa, its pleasant conversation regarding this piece of writing here at this website,I have read all that, so now me also commenting at this place"

There is not really anything to READ in this blog, just to WATCH and LISTEN.

So why would anyone spend the time to search out websites to write just something - which is so general that it can fit to (almost) all posts?

What benefits do they have of that? There is no link to their website - which would make it obviously spam. I really have a hard time to see why they would do it. Yes, there are people who offer their services in comments, But just writing that they like the ARTICLE I WRITE - while there is none. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

The ways of the internet is mysterious, and the motivations of some people, too.

I am asking myself: Is the better ranking in Google with having a lot of comments on posts reason enough to approve stuff which is not related?

What is your though on that?

Thanks everybody for your ideas in reply to my question. I see that you all are confirming what I am thinking about this sort of comments.
Yes, I delete them totally, at least mark them as Spam.
Do you know which way is better? Is there a chance that the computer/server learns what not to let pass? I should have Akismet installed there....
Still it takes time to go through 50+ comments to pick out the very few which are real.

Delete them, Heidi, you don't need them cluttering up your wonderful website.....

It is spam posted by bots which is why it is so generic. Mark them as spam because comments like that add zero value to your business!

These are people trying to get backlinks to their websites...

Even comments that are not spam don't have to be approved. Only approve comments that add great value.

I think it's the same generalized sentence added repeatedly on many blogs trying to evoke some sort of interaction and interest.

You maybe getting some spam.

Hi Heidi, I have has a quick look at your website. You can turn of comments if you want. Irv.

Hey Heidi, I checked out your website.

Maybe Robots looking for a meal from around the world. There are search engines out there programmed to do this type of searching!! Don't open to reply, virus's abound!!

You said there's no link going back to the poster of comment, so why would they do those nuisances if there's no benefit for them in return?

I think, the reason they're doing it is, they are testing the waters. They are taking a pulse if your blog is still active, and once they get the hint it is, then another wave of spams will follow.

Just my opinion.

I personally only approve comments directly rated to the content...trying to rank on what you might otherwise consider as spam, is like accepting a parcel meant for someone else?
