My Network consist of a PC connected to the Internet via cable. I have the modem from the provider and a Netgear wirelesss router which gives me WiFi to use my laptop at will. W

Some ISP, especially some of the satellite companies (but so do certain cable providers) impose "data caps." You can actually use up your data transfer allocations if you reach a certain amount of MBs. If the ISP, if it's not lying, tells you that you have unlimited Internet access, and in fact you do - but they have a trick up their sleeve, and are technically not lying to you!

You exceed a certain amount of data transfer in any given month, no matter what part of the month you're in, your Internet speed gets kicked in its rear. The only thing you can do is either upgrade or wait til the end of the billing cycle.

Some say data caps don't exist, but I can attest that they can and they do. I know DirectTV does it. It states this in their Q&A pages and knowledge base. People wonder why they can access the Internet but suddenly lose their Internet speed. If they do it, so do others, and it's probably a more common practice than one might think.

Today I use Bright House Networks. I hate certain aspects about this company, but one thing is for sure. When they say "Unlimited Internet" this means access AND no limit on data transfer.

Others say the same thing and you can get on the Internet but you can't get anywhere on it the instant you reach the ceiling! Some leave out the "Unlimited Internet" in their advertisements, but they lure people in with their low, low pricing!

You get what you pay for!

Something to look for in your ISP's documentation. One trick you can try is to use a different computer because the ISP goes by the I.P. address and not the account. However, most ISPs have long figured this out, but if Cox Cable is not a large one and is using dated technology, you might get away with it. When I reached the data cap for TengoInternet, I discovered I could simply use a different computer and I was in business again! This was just two months ago before I left them! Muahahaha! I left it because it was horrible service. Using different computers worked every time! However, trying to pull this on DirectTV does NOT work! :(

Your answer makes sense but if I want to go to google. yahoo, etc. I have no problem. Why would that be?

You may be allocated enough speed to be able to open pages. However, if you try to use online applications, watch videos, download stuff, you may find it's extremely slow, restricted. What is the behavior when you go to use these?

For example, TengoInternet did not completely kill your access. However , in this case, with Internet speeds of 3.5 to 7 kbps during restriction, this barely allowed opening of pages, and trying to get on WA was almost impossible. Email took several minutes to load. However, simple pages with just text and few if not any images would load fairly quickly.

IF you are experiencing a data cap, your data transfer restriction may be a bit more lenient, allowing you to browse websites and even get into your email.

Have you tried testing your Internet speeds?

http://www.speedtest.net/

If you are getting what you are supposed to be getting for download/upload speeds, then you probably are not experiencing a data cap.

You are very knowledgeable and I thank you for the info and the link.

There are a number of other things that can mess up your Internet performance. You can try the following to troubleshoot these issues.

1. Your browser. Try a different one.
2. Malware. Malwarebytes; CCleaner; and other cleaners
3. A bad port (as was mentioned below) Use a different port. (I don't know much about ports to be able to help with this)
4. Go to your Program List and check for "RelevantKnowledge." If you find it, you may have found your problem! This little demon causes browser indigestion. No joke! Remove it.
5. Data Caps Upgrade or wait it out. (I noticed you said below that this is sporadic. If this is the case, it's probably NOT a data cap, but in all this, at least you are now aware of them!)
6. Your computer. Try using a different computer.
7. Poor modem performance. Two things here - reset your modem. If you've already done that, try using an ethernet cable and override your WiFi connection, if your modem supports it. You would then have a wired connection which can't be compromised by overcrowding of other users in your area.
8. Radio reception. Something might be interfering with the WiFi signal. It could be an electrical device, such as a welder or even a small appliance, nearby that someone is using that is blocking the signal and may be why your issue seems to be spradic. It is possible for you to change the frequency to another available one. These are presets and is not like tuning a regular radio. Do this if you can't hook up ethernet.

I don't know everything and will never propose that, but I've had my share of Internet connectivity problems and have even learned how to reset a modem that I don't have physical access to from my computer! In this case, I was being provided wireless Internet access where I was living but the modem was in the house, inaccessible to me and someone taught me how to get into it. It's not hard! Sometimes the folks that had access would balk at having to reset the thing every other day because it was screwing up, and someone on here showed me how to do this.

Thanks for allowing me to lend a hand. I hope something from this thread, either from my suggestions or those of others' helps you resolve the issue!

What about Verizon Fios, what's your take on their internet services, do they have a bandwidth limitation?

Cox cable is my only option. Not even AT&T,

No, but be prepared that a firm from Connecticut is going to be taking over operations for Verizon and it won't be known what will become of things until this company settles in and makes the changes it makes.

Expect this sometime during the next six months.

However, Verizon, from my experience, does not have such limitations. I wanted to get in with this company but unfortunately it does not have the fiber optics through this particular area. In my opinion, Bright House Networks is inferior, but it too, does not have limitations.

You wouldn't want AT&T anyway. It's still pretty backward. It was the first ISP I had in 1997 - and still provides 1997 services at least for the area in which I live! I found that Cox Cable does (or has) initiated a data cap. You should have a meter for your account for data usage somewhere accessible to you on their site. However, there is other interesting info...

Source:

"In September 2011, Cox announced the availability of a data usage meter for customers to check their data usage. As of October 2012, Cox does not charge customers who exceed their usage amount each month. It is unknown if this policy will change in the future.[28]

In 2014, Cox announced they would begin offering 1 Gbit/s internet speeds under the name "G1GABLAST" in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Omaha, with plans to begin offering it in the rest of their service areas by the end of 2016. They also announced that they would double internet speeds for all customers at no cost at the same time. They began rolling out the new speeds in Phoenix in early October of the same year.[29] Additionally, Cox has launched their G1GABLAST service to 1 apartment complex in Orange County, California."

Great information, Thanks.

Hmmmm, sounds like maybe a problematic port? Seems like if you're pinging and not getting a response there's a closed door somewhere... may be as simple as choosing the right port. Been there a few times in years past.

But it is sporadic.

I don't have this issue at all. What are your speeds in terms of mbps and how many users do you have in your area of residency?

The WiFi connects me to Netflix and the laptop. I have Cox cable and perhaps they are doing something so I upgrade to a more expensive plan or modem.

I believe so, ISP definitely can be somewhat sneaky sometimes.

How much bandwidth have you utilized already for the day?

I am not sure.
