I Can't Afford It!

I know this is a thought that clangs around in many people's heads when they first find Wealthy Affiliate. I know for many, myself included, this isn't simple excuse making.

So I want to share a story from my past about not being able to afford it.

When I was in college I caught the golf bug in a big way. I wanted to play every day. One problem. Golf is pretty expensive, and I was a broke college kid who could barely afford three beers on "dollar draft" night at the bar.

I was a bit frustrated. I learned that at any public golf course you can go and chip and putt for free. So, with every spare moment I had, that is exactly what I did. I found a course that had a nice little practice area, and I would spend hours there at a time.

I probably could have used a few of those hours to pull my GPA out of the gutter, but I was following my passion and in a state of bliss every moment I was there. I would go there before classes, and after classes, and sometimes even during classes.

One day a couple of months into this routine, the head pro at the course came over to where I was practicing, and said, "how's it going, I have seen you spending a lot of time out here". I thought maybe I had overstayed my welcome on the "free practice" policy.

I simply nodded, and then he asked why he never saw me out on the course actually playing golf. I told him that I couldn't afford it. "Well, it seems like you're putting in an awful lot of work to never get to play." I laughed a little and told him it didn't feel much like work.

He invited me to play a round with him the next day, if I was interested. Of course I was, but I was also nervous, and felt a little ashamed of my situation. I accepted anyway.

We played the next day, and things went well. I ended up shooting two over par, mostly because of the short game I had been working on for the last couple of months. At the end of the round he asked me where I played golf growing up. When I told him I only started playing the game recently he laughed out loud, called me a liar, and said he needed to buy me a beer.

We went inside, sat down at the bar, and after ordering the beers, he called someone over from the other end of the bar. He introduced me to Paul, and told him that I was interested in walking on to Paul's team.

It turned out that Paul was the head coach of the college team. To make a long story short, I ended up making the team, and got to play golf for free every day.

Hey Haven,
That's a great example!!!

Tried and True

Elaine

Thanks, Elaine.

Really related to this as a "broke" college student and college golf player, always believe in this Haven!

Thank you for sharing. Much love,

Elaina

Glad you relate Elaina. Remember to express your passion through your play. Enjoy the process both here and on the course, and you will do great things.

Thanks for connecting.

Cheers,
Haven

Love your golf story! -- thanks kindly for sharing your now learned wisdom from the experience of days gone by... it truly is all about the application of what we know in taking the action steps to fruition ...

.... all the best for every success... cheerio... :)

Thank you, Keishalina. Best wishes to you as well.

Haven

What a remarkable story.

It feels good to share it. Reminds me of some things I have forgotten over the years.

People will notice when you show your love

That is absolutely the truth, Loes. Real passion always stands out in a crowd.

Great story Haven!

I was the same way in college. Played all the time in order to have a release from the schooling. My school did not have a college team. But, it was a lot cheaper back then!

I still escape into golf. It’s like meditation for me. Funny part is, I still practice far more than I play.

Nothing wrong with that! I too loved just being at the golf course. These days I don't have time to play as I used to.

My game is now called army golf . . . left, right, left right . . . LOL!

What an engaging story. Got me glued to the end. Thanks for sharing this great advice and story

Thanks for reading. I don’t often tell stories about myself, but it’s amazing easy it is to write a simple anecdote. No research needed!

Loved this article, just goes to show dedication pays off, and doing what you love is never work.
Blessings, Scarlett and Elaine

Thank you EandS. Glad you enjoyed it.

Your blog is inspiring. Telling people to go after their dreams. Which I totally agree, it took me longer than others. Living on a fixed income I jumped in an took the chance for I have faith behind me. Your blog is good but lengthly. That's what friends are for to tell you the truth about how they feel.
P.S. I removed the sample page:-)
