Wayne Dyer 1940-2015

When I remember Dr. Wayne Dyer and reminisce about my introduction to his work, I am immediately catapulted back to the early 1980s when I was a journalism student at Cal State, L.A.While browsing in the student book store one day, I stumbled upon a book whose title attracted me.It was called, “Your Erroneous Zones.”After reading a synopsis of the book on its jacket, I felt the need to buy it.So, I did. After reading it, the book inspired me to work on myself; to do everything I could to become a better human being. If one could describe the essence of Dr. Dyer’s work, I think it would be safe to say that he inspired self-improvement through introspection. He discouraged people from blaming others or blaming circumstances for their problems, but rather to take full responsibility for improving their own lives.Reading his first book opened the door which led me to a pathway of self-exploration.

He was not a proponent of religion. However, he was a champion for spirituality. He was once quoted as saying, and I paraphrase, “. . . people shouldn’t strive to be Christians. They should strive to be Christ-like.”He saw Jesus as a teacher of love and self-reliance.Thus, by the 1990s, he altered his message to include spirituality. This was evidenced in his second book, “Real Magic.”

Part of Dyer’s public appeal, in my opinion, stemmed from his background as a self-made man.Born in Detroit, Michigan 75 years ago, he experienced a difficult childhood. His father abandoned the family when he and his two brothers were small boys, leaving his mother to raise them alone. As a result, he spent much of his childhood, until the age of 10, in an orphanage.

After high school graduation, he embarked on a 2-year stint in the U.S. Navy.Later, he attended Wayne State University, ultimately earning a D.Ed. degree in counseling. He decided to focus his career on academics and although he had established a successful private therapy practice, he continued to lecture at St. John’s University in New York as well as publish academic papers in journals. With the success of “Your Erroneous Zones,” his bookstore appearances and media interviews garnered him appearances on popular television shows such as “The Merv Griffin Show,” The Tonight Show” and “The Phil Donahue Show.”

I continued to follow his work right up to and including his lecture series, “The Power of Intention,” which eventually led to another book.

What more could possibly be asked or expected of a human being than what Wayne Dyer did throughout his lifetime? He lived the best life he could possibly live.He strived on a daily basis to be the best person he could possibly be, and he inspired others to do the same.I am saddened by Dr. Dyer’s untimely death, but he left behind his incredible work for us to study and put into practice in order for us to become the best we can be.Wayne Dyer was a magnificent human being and he will be sorely missed.
