Seeking perfection is over rated

I have a couple of Dot Com hero's whos lives have made a difference to our world.

I know we have Face Book, YouTube and Google that are all noteworthy however they did not build things.

M first on this list is Steve Jobs. He changed the world and created a dynasty that continues to make a difference. However, Steve was a manical perfectionist down to the smallest detail .Every part of the process had to be exact, right through to the delivery experience.
How many of us marvelled at the first I.Phone packed in a white box that was close to perfection.

He did not stop at computers Pixar also started a trend of excellemce that has been difficult to follow.

I have just finished a Biography on Elon Musk known for Tesla, Solar City and Space X

Musk is a different character that concentrated as much on delivery with a new world product even with the flaws included.

Just today another Rocket failed to launch however another was wheeled out to try again.

What does all this mean to us humble bloggers

The fisrt thing I have learnt is having a non negotiable plan and committing everything to it.
Good days, bad days , failures and wins are all just part of the journey.

The next is an attitude of consistent application to the objective. It is never too hard or too difficult it just must be done.

Musk is more of a risk taker where delivery is the ultimate achievement.

Over Time Elon has been close to bankrupt, with limited resources and stretched to the limit overcoming massive problems yet never once gave up.

The end result was worth the journey.

Both guys made a difference to the world

They bought manufacturing back to in-house delivery so they were not dependant on Chinese, Russian or Korean content. They did their own work.

Whilst Motorola started the Mobile phone journey it was quickly eclipsed by the Japanese and Korean manufacturers. I.Phone changed a phone to a computer and changed our world becoming the leader in the field.

Musk has pioneered the Battery powered cars when everyone said it was impossible, now it is just a matter of time before the ancient petrol engine is a relic of the past.

He has taken on the space race delivering results at an affordable price. It Is not just about going to the Moon or Mars although that is the ultimate objective it is the supply of satelites for everyday use. Think Google maps and Sat phones as examples of low level satelites delivering results.

Your world can be made better by emulation

I sometimes look at my future goal and being only half way home wonder if it is all worthwhile. I spend money on the internet and a massive amount of time for a limited return. Is it all worth while?
My heroes remind me that the life journey is not always a bed of roses, however consistent application will win out in the end.

Musk also takes me away from perfection to concentrate on volume because it is the delivery that counts.

Not every rocket blows up some are very successful, a lesson for bloggers

The unauthorised Biography of Elon Musk by Ashlee Vance is a really good read.

Hi Hanley. Thanks for your excellent highlighting of these differences.

Over the years I’ve read quite a few books about many highly successful people. As you most certainly know from your own reading, on the subject of risk... all of them, except for perhaps Warren Buffet, have (or had) a very high tolerance for risk and at some point went ‘all in’. They effectively burnt their boats. Then those who lost all at that point found a way back. Anybody who wants to become a top performing entrepreneur need to be prepared for such possibilities. :-)

Thanks Richard.
I guess it is success at any cost and not being able to give in.

Very interesting post, Peter! I learned a few things here!

Interesting blog. Thank you for sharing

Hey Hanley I really enjoyed this. I like the ying and yang comparison between Jobs and Musk. Finding the sweet spot where the kinks have been mostly worked out to allow for implementation.

Hugh

My question is where will Musk end up, relatively young and still fully charged anything is possible.

Peter h

Yes indeed and how many mini Musk's are in awaiting

thanks Hugh,
not many in a life time but they are coming.
