Kia Ora, good afternoon, from New Zealand Friends and Colleagues.

In a recent post one of the elements I talked about was Being the Best Version of Yourself.

5 Things For Everyday

There was not enough time or space to delve into that more deeply in that post so I thought that I would come back to it for this one.

I offer you in this post 8 thoughts about how we might measure whether we are becoming the best version of ourselves based on a range of articles and research that I have done over a period of time.

If one person benefits from this post then I will be happy, enjoy........

Be Prepared To Reinvent You

Becoming the best version of you may mean raising your own bar.

This may elicit some favourable and unfavourable responses from those around you so be prepared for that.

But be bolstered by your own convictions.

You might have to let go of certainty and be prepared to embrace ambiguity this creates flexible thinking around the art of the possible and enable and empowers you.

Acknowledge Personal Fear And Then Crush It!

Don’t allow fear to limit your potential. It is okay to admit to and feel fear, it provides an edge that keeps you on your toes and alert to threats and opportunities. It is the most primeval of our ancient instincts. Harness it don’t be conquered by it. Be Always aware that what you seek may be right on the edge of your personal comfort zone boldness in the face of fear will strengthen you personal resolve and confidence.

Be Wise, Seek Support, Get Educated

Never stop learning by personal research and by associating with those that are successful. Find a mentor and in the pursuit of the best version of you, emulate their attitudes and actions. Become an expert at whatever it is that you decide you want to do.

Delivery Always Beats Debate

Don’t spend over long in the study and discussion space. Knowledge is useful but only when applied to derive a constructive output. Study for study’s sake leads nowhere so have a clear purpose and follow through on the purpose often.

Take a Long Term View

It is amazing how many people come to WA expecting to make money instantly, in a week or in a couple of months, despite the vast majority of those articles that attract them being very clear that it is not a get-rich-quick scheme. There is something deep in the human psyche of some that seems to want or need something for nothing.

It may be possible to get rich by doing nothing if you have money to put to work for you, but you first have to make that money.

Often things will not go as you have planned them, having your own strategic long term vision keeps you centred on moving towards your end target.

As an example once I had made the decision that WA was the vehicle;e for me to achieve I then made a 16-month plan to get me there with achievable measurable and realistic milestones along the way that encourage me and allow me to take stock as I go but always with the end prize in mind. Try it if you have not already done so.

Work Towards 1% Daily Improvement.

If you do this you will actually improve by 3700% over a year. More accurately that’s actually 3778.34%, as it is a compound improvement LoL.

You see 1% is manageable, both practically, but also perhaps more importantly, psychologically. Given that our goal is improvement over time, it just seems sensible to apply the theory of compounding effect on our personal improvement goals.

Amplify Key Strengths.

We can be many things, but usually not all at the same time!

Amplify your known strengths. I have always been an effective communicator, I can write and I can speak and I have an ability to help others to learn and top develop themselves.

I carved out a senior leadership career by exploiting and maximising the potential of those strengths. When I build a team I try to make sure that I have on that team, people who have strengths complimentary to my own. My aim being, that together we are the sum of the parts.

Look to develop but don’t dwell on perceived weaknesses, maximise your strengths.

Deploy Macro-Patience and Micro-Aggression.

Use all 24 hours in the day, by doing what has to be done and accept what happens after that

will happen, whether you worry about it or not. It is useful to learn what is inside and outside of your sphere of influence and controls and use that knowledge to best advantage.

As I have said many times before in this Blog, moving in the right direction, one step at a time, however short those steps might be, will eventually get you to the desired destination.

However, you should realise, that once you get there, you will be looking for another one, because if you are the best of you then there is always another adventure beckoning you……..

I am off to work on my 1% for the day, in the meantime I wish you all a restful, and perhaps productive weekend, in whatever part of the world you are in.

From New Zealand, friends and colleagues, good afternoon

Hamish, what a powerful and timely post. Love it!
Thank you for taking the time to go in depth with this post. Sometimes we can get sidetracked by shiny objects (👋guilty) and then it's easy to blame everything around us for perceived failure or lack of progress.
It really is about being the best version of ourselves in whatever we say and do and that depends on us.
With your article we could literally create a cheat sheet with your headlines to help keep us on track....so thank you again!

Michelle
