Struggling With Content?

Writing Content

I see a lot of people in chat or in replies when I welcome them saying that their biggest fear is writing content. This despite the fact that in the training there is a constant reminder that you don't have to be the greatest writer in the world in order to be successful as an Affiliate or Digital Marketer.

I thought that it might be useful to take stock of some things that may help with people who don't perhaps have as much confidence as they would like about this aspect of the WA journey.

Niche Selection

Many people worry about their niche and whether it will give them enough material or if they can connect it to products that people would want. The first thing that I would suggest is there is n no need to worry about this at all other than to make sure that what you choose is something that you already know about and interests you or something that you want to know about that interests you.

In many ways I would see the second of those options as the preferable one because it provides a double hit from a learning and knowledge building opportunity.

But whichever you choose you need to be interested to stay motivated to write about it and content is your life's blood.

Just to show how relatively easy it is to adapt anything to a niche I wrote a wee blog some weeks ago called, Steampunk a Niche - A Case Study (you can find it in my blog roll below).

Steampunk is a long time interest of mine though I have not turned it into a niche I might well do and others have already.

But the Blog explains how I would if I was going to. It might be helpful.

Planning and Writing

I would rarely if ever sit down and write a stream of words from beginning to end without first doing some planning and then putting my framework (headings) on the paper first. (Kyle actually talks about this in one of the training videos but it is a classic academic writers' technique).

The framework gives me my logic flow and then I can fill in the detail. Now what may be counter-intuitive to many is that you do not then need to start of at the beginning and fill in the sections to the end. I again rarely if ever do that.

No, what I usually do is write the end first, concentrating on my strong call to action statement woven into a readable narrative. This gives me the aiming mark to build up the rest of the foregoing text to lead the reader to that call to action.

I then fill in the sections, not in any particular order, but as the inspiration takes me. Finally, I will go over it all and 'sense check' it and maybe move sections between structure headings.

The last act before hitting publish is to run the spell/grammar,construction checker and do the appropriate corrections.

Top Tips

Before I joined WA some years ago I used to write content for others through a writers' brokerage. I would be given the subjects and the keywords and I would then write the content which others would use on their websites.
Here are some things that have helped me, when I was doing that, which may help others who are struggling with content writing:

  • If you have a writing block do not under any circumstances try to force it; you will produce poor quality work or stress yourself when you don't need to.
  • If you are blocked on one subject then work on another and come back when you are ready.
  • If you can manage it I would advise to work on two niches simultaneously to allow you some variety in your content writing.
  • Keep your writing relatable, casual and conversational in style.
  • Remember who your audience are and check that you are writing for that audience.
  • Always check and proofread your work before publishing and then go back and check it again after you have published it.
  • Make sure your keywords are appropriate to what you are writing and be subtle and sparing in their placement (refer training from Kyle)

Have Fun

Above all have some fun with it.

If it becomes a chore you will demotivate yourself and your writing and creativity will tail off anyway.

So I would always recommend looking for new angles in your writing, to keep it interesting for you.

I hope some of this is useful to somebody; Good luck with your content writing

Good Morning Hamish,

You have come up with some good tips.
I try to write imagining my reader sitting in front of me like we are having a conversation. It does not always function as sometimes what I write about might be a tick difficult or scientific but I am doing my best.

I receive many newsletters from doctors or environmental groups. Then I keep articles I read in different newspapers. It is a handy file as it provides material so I can write a post. With having this system I normally have always something handy to write about.

Greetings from the south of Spain,

Taetske

Great advice on the research and resource library thanks Iaparra. 🧐

Thank you Hamish for your words of encouragement.
