Are You An Impostor?

Kia Ora,

Good afternoon, from New Zealand, Friends and Colleagues

A short 'think-piece' today just to get us thinking about what we might really be doing here, based on personal life experience, and observation of others, in a 45-year career as a professional leader......

How Badly Do You Really Want It

Straight to the core of the matter; often I have said to myself that I am willing to do whatever it takes, and often when I say that, I really do mean it at the time.

The problem is that reality continually throws us curve balls, and it is our resilience that will decide how far we get, rather than our daydreams or wishes.

It Has To Be Personal

In my experience, in order to achieve something you have to really want to do it. That is why Eisenhower's famous uttering is so compelling for any leader.

So anyone here who is 'copying' someone else's view of success or achievement or definition of done, probably is an impostor (although they may not yet realise it)

This is exactly why one of the first things a that you are encouraged to do at Wealthy Affiliate is to set some tangible, realistic, achievable short and medium term goals, to help personalise the journey.

Revisit The Goals

I am no psychologist but I have been taught a great deal about the human psychology as I

have been developed in my various leadership roles.

One of the things that I have learned and continue to believe is that personal goals are powerful drivers if taken seriously.

It is statistically proven over and over again that there are more achievements realised by those who set goals, in a meaningful way, rather than just going through the motions and ticking the box.

SMART Goals are a great way of preventing oneself from becoming an impostor.

Your Choice

I have a suggestion that you may consider, or not, it is your choice entirely.

First of all I would ask you to seriously go back and consider what you really did when you set your goals on joining WA.

Ask yourself the question, did you just go through a box ticking exercise, because it was part of the onboarding process when you wrote those goals down?

Or did you really mean it, and if you really meant it, have you been working specifically to achieve what you said you wanted to achieve?

Are your goals real goals or just wishes?

If they are not SMART then they probably are wishes, only you know.

Yesterday

We are all human, we are all frail. Yesterday I took my foot off the pedal I had been going full

steam for 113 days since joining WA. Yesterday I fell into unexpected lethargy. Oh I did my obligatory 10 mins of doing something to move forward but I had a lot more time available to me that I could have given to business activity. I just was not, for whatever reason, motivated

So I binge watched a streaming TV series LoL. I even felt wee pangs of guilt while doing so.

My goals are real and I have developed them beyond what is written on the goals thread at WA to be fully fledged SMART Goals.

This morning I revisited them and did an attitude check and I am back on message, determined to achieve what I have set out to achieve between now and May 2021.

I may not have been, if I did not have that 'map' to return to and keep my course straight and true.

With that, from New Zealand Friends and Colleagues I bid you a sunny Southern Hemisphere good afternoon.

Thank you for your post. Upon returning to WA I have decided to start over in my training, find a new theme and a new niche. I too need to revisit my goals. Those that I made, I made under the attitude that this was a get rich scheme, which it is not. I will make more realistic goals that I know I will be able to succeed with.

Take care
Charlotte

Charlotte that is bold and very sensible you are obviously a good learner🧐

Good on you for returning and rethinking your goals and game plan Charlotte and good luck with them.
Mark

Thank you, Mark. And I have added you to my network of members here.

You're welcome Charlotte and I have returned the favour!

Mark

Hamish, the definition of lethargy is not taking a short break after 113 days of toil my friend!
And I thought you were going to regail us with stories of your derring do on the set of Mission Impossible looking at that first photo ;-)
Relax, you deserve a beer and a foot massage....losss
Mark

I remember that wonderful series Mission Impossible, I think that you may have given me an idea for a new post for my Baby Boomer Blog LoL🧐

Although I know of the series Hamish I was thinking more about the Tom Cruise M.I. films where he and others use those masks to change their IDs😉
Chuck us the link of your BB blog post when you write it, it'd be interesting to read!
Mark

Oh the masks were invented in the original 1960’s series Mark, Cruise is a pale reflection on the original. Given the special effects available to them in the 60’s they were amazing.

Yes I will.

I have to be honest and say that I've never seen any of the tv series programmes, just the films Hamish.
They were ok but nothing special I guess.

Look forward to it👌

I will make a point of it oh and well done I see you are knocking on the door of an ambassadorship🧐

It seems like it Hamish although when I became active again recently it wasn't an objective, it's just a consequence of my involvement.
I was super proud when it first happened but I'm a little more circumspect about things like that now.
Cheers Hamish
Mark

Understood but there you are back in the rankings today well done🧐

Thank you very much Hamish, I guess I am🙂

👍🏼🧐

We are all human and, as you say, it's natural for our desire/determination to fluctuate as our moods, feelings and outside influences change.

The important thing is to have the road map or plan to get back on course and SMART goals do this as you point out.

Thanks Hamish

Cheers

Rick

Thanks Rick good to hear from you🧐

Hey Hamish. Really nice post. Actually, I lingered hard and long before I wrote my goals, completed my profile, my very first blog and so on. The list is endless because it's ongoing. Haha!

Anyway my point is that I stall because I want it to be realistic. Nowadays, when I go back to them it still represent who I am and what I want to achieve.

Carol

That is a great test Carol and it must give you some confidence🧐

Excellent article! I needed this, thank you so much for sharing. One thing I love about this community is the amount of well rounded individuals. It's extremely important that we surround ourselves with like minded people...It helps keep us on track.

Thanks again for sharing, I can't express enough how much I appreciate it!

Chicken soup for my soul...
