Misfit - Part 2

In my last post, I posted the famous Steve Jobs (or Jack Kerouack) quote about misfits. I said that sometimes I feel like one, and I thought I'd expand on that a little.

I think being a misfit is part and parcel of being good entrepreneur. See... I was a weird kid.

Growing up, yeah, I went through the motions of being like all the other kids outside. I tried out for little league and sucked at it. Ended up being a bench-warmer. I was in good physical condition, but my heart just wasn't into competitive sports. My competitiveness didn't kick in until years later when I entered talent contests.

You see, I wanted to be a musician. So while the other kids were out in the street playing stick ball, curb ball, wire ball, half-ball, and touch football... I was up in my room with bleeding fingers, waiting for the callouses to form so I could play nonstop for hours.

Years later, and even now, performing on a stage in front of a roomful of people, it's an isolating experience. Same as when I was tending bar. Most people are more familiar with the side of the bar where you sit and drink. I was the one serving.

When the venue closed, whether I was the bartender or musical entertainment, by the time I was ready to go out myself, all of the other bars and restaurants were closed or closing. Those that were open were usually little dives where everyone left is already drunk, or an all night diner where the patrons were (yeah, you guessed it - already drunk).

Even when in a relationship, there were too many times where my significant other and I were like two ships passing in the night. By the time I got home from work, I would be climbing into bed about an hour or two before she had to wake up for her job. Ironically, we were both in different ends of the entertainment field. I worked late nights as a musician or bartender. She was a stand-in on a TV show. Her call time was often 4 or 5 in the morning. We usually had some time together on Friday nights.

That's why I believe I was so easily able to gravitate toward working for myself. Being a solopreneur and an entrepreneur So much of my life was spent alone anyway. A friend of mine got me interested in HTML. That's another story. One thing lead to another and next thing you know, I had developed some internet skills - more on the creative side than the business side. That's what brought me here. I hope to learn the missing how to's of Internet Marketing and grow my business.

Some of us may be misfits, but we know where to learn how to make the the pieces fit into place. That's what brought us to Wealthy Affiliate University.

Right?

Great post, thank you for sharing.

Great stuff...

Thanks for this. And did you get you own player card? That's awesome.

There was a softball team that came into my bar every Tuesday night amd went through two cases of beer. They created a new position for me... Team Nutritionist. They even had a card made for me!

OK, I REALLY would like to hear how your friend got interested in HTML!!! How did that conversation go, "Hal, you wanna grab a beer? Oh, by the way, do you know about HTML?"

To be a misfit just means you're not in the right environment. Glad you found your right "fit", Hal.

I will be getting to that.

The vernacular in job hunting is about being a "fit" Hal!

I'll keep that in mind if I ever decide to hunt for a job :-)
