Brain Boosters

Recently, I mentioned to a friend that I don't think I'm anywhere nearly as driven as I used to be in my 30's. Back in the day, I had a little home recording studio with lots of complicated gear, and I devoured the instruction manuals until I had internalized every aspect of operation. I couldn't wait to get up each morning and fire up all of my equipment, put on my headphones, sit at my synthesizer keyboard or strap on my guitar and begin recording.

Some days, I'd forget to eat, even breathe for hours, working late into the night, The time passed too quickly. I'd sleep for a few hours and wake up, have some coffee and start again - ASAP. I didn't care if I never sold a single song. The process of writing songs and recording them was all-encompassing and listening back to my music was ever so satisfying.

Same has always applied to every other kind of writing. I always seem to have something to say and my outlet has always been writing in one form or another. Newsletters, blogs, essays. I have always loved to write. Still do. But...

I'm 64 now, and have gone through some major life changes, most notably, a bout woht cancer. I suspect the chemo and radiation therapy has taken a lot of steam out of me. It's been about two years since the ordeal, but I've read where it can take a pretty long time to recover.

Long story shorter, My friend suggested that supplements might help. I had seen commercials for Focus Factor, which are basically vitamins, but witih a few added ingredients that promote memory and focus for the brain. Upon further searching, I found that brain boosters or brain enhancers are known as nootropics or nootropicsupplements.

I've thought about trying brain boosting supplements in the past, however, now, I'm thinking more seriously about it. If any members have any experience and/or opinions about nootropics, I'd appreciate the input. Can any members out there shed some light on the subject of brain boosters?

I look forward to posting at a later date to share my experiences with you. Currently, the best I can do is tell you about tripping on LSD in the 70's.... but I'm pretty sure it's not the same :-)

Thank you in advance for your comments...

Hal

Well heck if you try them please let me know the outcome. I'll start using them myself before I'm completely senile.

I think a lot of people would benefit from certain supplements if they were only aware of them and knew which ones were safe and the right individual choices for their situations.

Good afternoon Hal, nice to see you again.

Sorry, I cannot help you on those boosters but on my Health website, I do have a page about Dr. Amen, a world famous brain doc.
I have recently looked at 7 videos on The Sacred Plant, wrote a summary and published it as a page on the same website.
Did you see my latest WA post on Welcome Refugees? there you can meet my US Expat.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Thanks, Taetske, I will take a look.I really appreciate the input!

Hal, NOTHING is the same as the LSD in the 70's

You got that right lol

Hi Hal,
I have read about the nootropics and they are fascinating. I have not used any of the new ones. What I have used is high potency B Vitamins. They are amazing. I got such bad brain fog after my car accident I could hardly think. It was awful. It turns out I have auto-immune conditions and my body was revolting from all the stress. I was deficient in B12, D and magnesium etc.

My Dad had a rare form of leukemia. He had to do chemo every few years and the last few years were really hard. He was so fatigued and tired and had trouble thinking. I gave him liquid B vitamins and it helped him instantly.

B12 is measured whereas the other B vitamins are not usually measured in standard tests I don't think. I tried sublingual B12 pills that you dissolve under the tongue. These helped but they were not nearly enough for what I need. I had a B12 shot but had a bad reaction to it. No more of those for me. Then I found B complex (12, 6, 2, 3). This stuff works. It is so healthy for you on so many levels but first of all it wakes up your brain. There are no scary side effects that I know of. You could get a niacin flush if you are sensitive (I am not) and your urine will turn bright yellow but that's ok! The B vitamins are water soluble so you don't have to worry too much about an overdose!

The concentration looks insane when you read the label but that means you don't need to take much and it doesn't taste bad anyway. The FDA levels for vitamins and minerals here are devastatingly low. Most people are deficient in these basic elements necessary for life. The levels are based on a very low dose that is enough to keep you alive, not for you to be healthy. Nutrient deficiency causes or contributes to heart disease (magnesium), depression (magnesium), MS (Vit D) and all the common deadly diseases. This is due to soil depletion through industrial agriculture. A fruit or vegetable a generation ago had tens or hundreds of times more nutrition than the same one does now. Also due to competition between nutrients and fertilizers (I am just learning that commercial fertilizers keep some minerals from being absorbed) poor diets, processed food and on and on.

Anyway. The brand I use is Wellesse B Complex Complete. I order it from Amazon.

I don't remember if you drink caffeine. If you do you can use 5 Hour Energy shots. Those kinds of things have a bad rap but my doctor approved me using them! They don't have much sugar and especially if I sip it rather than chug it all at once he said it was fine as long as it made me feel better. I buy the Kirkland brand at Costco. They are exactly the same thing and made by the same company, just with a different label. They are way cheaper of course at Costco. They don't have as much B as the Wellesse but they are super convenient! They taste better chilled so I keep some in the fridge at home and work.

There are different forms of B12. Some work better for different people. B vitamins in general help with immunity, neurologic function, muscle weakness, energy, manufacturing of red blood cells, carrying oxygen and is even associated with alcoholism and diabetes! I am lumping all the B deficiency symptoms together here not breaking out by type of B. There is a list a mile long of all they do!

I hope you find something that helps!
Jessica

Thank you Jessica, so much for such a detailed reply. Coincidentally, I almost took a shot of the Kirkland Energy drink this morning. I work part time for CDS (the company that give out the free samples for Costco). There was a whole bowl full of them in the office. Now I wish I tried one!

I've heard B complex is effective. Also, Focus Factor and something called Piracetan.

As for Wellesse, I'm familiar with their liquid glucosamine. It's called Joint Juice and I takevit when my knees get creaky and cranky from standing all day.

Well it sounds like you are on the same wavelength Hal! If you want to try the Kirkland Energy without buying a whole case, just buy a 5 hour energy (Berry Flavor or something similar to the Kirkland flavors) at the grocery store or gas station store. Since they really are the same formula you could try one and see if you like it. I sip it over time rather than chug it at once. People can be sensitive and some get jitters, heart issues etc. if they aren't used to the caffeine. I feel pretty good about using them since even my Naturopathic doctor ok'd it! And the regular doctors can give you B12 shots...that is only B12 though. Despite my reaction to the shot, I would rather get my B this way since it has the other important B's as well as 12.

I tried Wellesse brand Aloe Vera but it was so ridiculously sweet tasting I just couldn't use it. The B is sweet and somewhat 'vitaminy' but not horrible.

Hi, Hal. Thank you for sharing, hope you find what you are looking for :)

Please keep us informed about the effects of the supplement. Thank you.

I intend to try at least one product and review it here and on my site after I've had enough time to evaluate the results and any side effects I experience. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Hal, I enjoyed the story. Irv.

Congratulations on being here to tell your story.

Stay well.

Susan

Greetings, Hal. Unfortunaty, I do not have any knowledge on brain boosters, but I do wish you well in your search to finding whatever can help you to reach a full recovery.

Writing songs and playing without breathing for hours....very impressive! I can only do the non-breathing thing for about 10 minutes, lol.

Always a pleasure chatting with you, Hal. Make sure to give tbat cutie pie dog of yours a hug for me!

Thanks, I will!
:-)
