About Gwfisher
Joined March 2014
Hello everyone! I am a retiree from the mortgage industry feeling guilty when my wife leaves for work and I face a day of unwanted leisure. I thought a "work at home business" might keep my mind from atrofying, especially if it involved learning a new skill set. At this point, I do not own a smart phone, my cell phone plan does not include text or data and the social media platforms are foreign to me. So, as you can tell, I have a lot NOT going for me. However, this old dog is
ready to learn new tricks and I look forward to your support.

UPDATE: 4/28/2014 - Finally got a site up www.thegolfingsenior.com. Had a tough time deciding on a niche but figured if there was one thing I knew, it was golf. This site actually will have very little to do with the game of golf but more about golf as a part of senior life. Of course, it is still a work in progress but please check it out and give me your comments. Thanks.

Thank you for the nice comment, Jude. I decided to follow you after reading your WA blogs and visiting your site. I have come to realize that I should limit my "follows" to those within the community that actually write something of value in their WA blogs rather than use the forum to publish something better suited for their FB friends. I have learned something from each of your blogs and am pleased to have found you.

Hi GW and thanks for the follow.

Your golfing site is outstanding - congratulations - a great mix of humor and information, professionally presented.

Whilst not a golfer, I am a sports nut so will be conducting in-depth visits to golfingsenior.

I think you are on a winner!

Cheers, Peter.

Thanks for the follow. I have visited your site - it looks clean, I like that. I will spend some time there to pick some tips, my golf has not been that good, and I think I now qualify as a senior!

Thanks Faith. I am in your site as we speak and you have led me to ShareASale to which I have applied. I am looking to keep my little golf blog as a sideline and begin to work up a retail site for monetization. I will leave a comment on your site when I leave it.

I looked at your site too.

I left a comment also which will help Google identify activity on your site. It is good reciprocal practice as we are all getting our sites to rank!

I often "don't play well with others" so I neglected to comment on your site. I have corrected my faux pas and posted a comment. I was sincere in my remarks. I found your site 1) very easy to navigate 2) clean page layout making it easy to read and 3) excellent material.

Best wishes gwfisher, the good thing is that you have a wealth of experience and the knowledge of applying yourself to the task at hand. Although it all seems strange right now you'll find that we are all at different points of the learning curve. This will always be the case. Don't worry, just press on! Have some fun!

Looking forward to following your progress!

Thank you Tria. After two months at this, my biggest accomplishment has been to impress my wife who wasn't convinced I would stick to it.

The site is beginning to rank well and I have had some Seniors ask if they could submit posts for publication. SO, maybe I will have some editorial support instead of winging it by myself.

I decided to follow you after viewing a chain of discussions in which your input seemed to resolve the issues. Then I went to your site and was WOWED! Beautiful layout (crisp and clean with very readable typeface) beautiful use of images and, of course, great content.

Where did you find your theme? I looked at scads of WP themes and nothing stood out. None seemed to have the ability to change font sizes other than the H1, H2, Paragraph, etc. From my publishing days I am used to using point sizes with unlimited choices. I would love to change to a more flexible theme but only after I get the hang of everything else.

But, I am getting off the subject (we seniors do that a lot). Simply said, I am very pleased to have someone of your experience to follow.

That is my demo website. Thanks for the compliments. The font sizes are changed by a plugin, as is the color. With the 3.9 update of WP, designers have had to scramble to replace TinyMCE. I think I am using WP Editor now. Best of luck to ya!

We have a lot in common, my site is dealing with people that are fit over 50, you have to be fit to play golf.
Reply
gwfisher Premium
In order to play golf at my advanced age you have to be both fit and flexible. As I am neither I really shouldn't be playing at all!
Let me know when your site is up and perhaps I can link to some of your posts in the future.

That is so funny because I feel the same way. I really did not want a personal facebook page either. I do have a smart phone, but it is an android. I prefer it over the Iphone. Technology and social media are the ways of the future though, so I guess we have to jump on a couple of those bandwagons if we want to keep up!

Thanks for the Follow! Up until one month ago I didn't even have a Facebook page, but had to make one for my health coaching practice I am starting up. I might have been the only person in my age group without one, so I hear you on being behind the ball. I have learned so much already, just from doing my own research and am ready to learn more here at WA. Good luck to you!

I now have a FB page as well as Google+, both for my website. It upset me that I could not have a business FB page without also having a personal page. I really, really, really don't want a personal page! And I am still not getting an Iphone!

Now that I am following you, I look forward to monitoring your progress. Regards, G.W.

Hi Gw....thanks for the follow. I can sure relate to the lack of 'techie' . I think it's our generation. Or at least mine (I;m 66). Just got my very first iPhone and broke it before I could make my first call. LOL Have to work a 1.5 hr trip to town to my closest Verizon to get it fixed. I live in the 'toolies.' I'm sure you will do fine with your brokering skillset. This will give yours and my brain a real workout, huh.

Hey Sheila - I just turned 69 although I feel younger. I really am trying to catch up with the "youngs'. Opened up a Facebook page - but haven't done anything with it. Also set up Google+ for my website and now I have to figure out what to post. You will find the community very helpful. It has gotten me out of two technical jams. I too live in the toolies (Shenandoah Valley of Virginia) but the closest town of any consequence is only 1 hour away, so you have me beat. I read your profile and I greatly admire your spunk given the health issues. I will look forward to monitoring your progress. I just launched my website after 6 weeks of struggle and now I just need to keep writing content.
Best of Luck!

Thanks for the follow Larry. I think this will be the blind leading the blind for the two of us. I joined on March 7th and have spent almost 14 hours a day since (no lie) trying to absorb all the tech stuff. I find WordPress more difficult to master than these younger kids. I have gone through 4 themed layouts before I found one I could actually work with. Then, I inadvertantly went "live" with my unfinished site to my embarrassement. Really didn't matter of course since my site will not show up on any search engines as yet. I have found a training source that I find more useful than WA. Check it out if you like (www.2createawebsite.com) and her sister site (www.2planawebsite.com). Also, www.wpbeginner.com is another great source for learning WordPress. Of course, go through all the WA courses and definitely go Premium, even if it is only for the first month. There is a lot of useful content in Premium. Also, I have gone to the Community once and people responded with answers immediately.
Good luck and keep in touch.
