How I Came Up With My First Niche

When we really think about it, picking a niche for a site should be something easy and straight forward - just pick one of your interests/hobbies and go with it. Although my guess would be that I was not the only one who struggled with making that decision.

I think it is true that a niche could be identified out of anything but that more enjoyment would come out of the process if it is something you are truly interested in.

My challenge was that I didn't have any current hobbies, and was not interested in making a site about old hobbies I had grown out of.

My solution to this problem was to pick a niche based on an hobby I didn't already have but wanted to have - playing the guitar. There were several things I noticed immediately by this decision.

The first thing was that I could not just jump into writing content - I had to research and learn it myself first. Although this took time it has definitely improved my overall understanding of playing the guitar, and forced me to learn things I may have never learned about.

The second thing I noticed was I had this growing motivation to keep practising the guitar in order to improve my site. For example, before I post how to play a song I have to make sure I can play it myself.

The third thing I noticed was that it is possible to create a site that provides value without claiming to be an expert. My site is framed as a guitar site for beginners by a beginner and thus tries to simplify a lot of the complexities on other sites.

I think building a new website is a great opportunity to learn new skills and find new interests and provides a solid base of motivation to ensure you pursue that goal.
