Day 5 Plastic Free Day

Over the last years the amount of plastic used in some place has increased dramatically. In other places the use of plastic bags has been banned completely, in yet others there are measures being taken to reduce or ban their use.

For some years now I always carry a small foldaway bag in my handbag for the times when I go shopping unexpectedly. This way I avoid having to buy or accept a plastic carrier bag.

This is a habit you might also like to adopt. You can keep a small bag in your handbag or a larger one in your car so that if you do need to go shopping you don't have to leave the shop with a carrier bag.

This might seem like a small step and insignificant but we know that everything begins with one small step. I believe we can all make a small difference.

On the island where I live the amount of plastic used is incredible - when you go shopping you get two or three carrier bags for just a few items. One large supermarket has now adopted a plastic free day once a month where shoppers have to pay for their carrier bags. It is a beginning although I am aware that we have a long way to go.

Happy Saturday

I agree many people aren't environmentally aware when it comes to plastic, glass and many other different things they throw away. My family uses reuseable bags for shopping, we keep several in our vehicles just in case we go shopping. If for some reason we do get a plastic bag we either save it to use as a trashbag for our small restroom trashcans or we recycle it. Our plastic bottles, glass bottles, glass jars we recycle to get money back.

You are absolutely on track Jack. Thanks to you and your family for doing your bit. Sure you are a great example to many, especially your children. Wonderful

Helpful update, Valina thank s for looking out for the environment in which we all live.

For sure! We are akk responsible.

Thanks for this article. In as much as it causes a lot of nuisance in some places where there is no control of their gabbages, I think it is quite helpful in some other ways. But thanks for the advice also remember that one easily forget these attachments to movement for example umbrellas, etc so it is with the bags carried either in the car or your bag. You might reach home before you realize you are with them. Well done

Yes that it true too. We can forget but it is all about practising and doing the best we can at any given moment. AND acknowledging that we are doing the best we can rather than chastising ourselves when we forget. :)

Plastic has become VERY problematic now thatit is used for almost everything...

Press On!

Arthur

Here on the island it has become a real problem. But at least there are other islands and countries bringing about change which we can look upon as examples.

Hi Valina, the use of plastic is a big problem. Irv.

so agree

Hi Valina, being a checkout operator in a supermarket, I see the amount of people that do sctually use their own carrier bags as you have to pay 5p per bag if you forget to bring one. You do still get people who forget to bring their bags out the car too. It is very easy to forget to lift a bag and I have to say I am the biggest culprit lol. Xx

Awareness is the first step to change... :)

Greetings Valina,

Yes, I've made it a habit to carry an extra plastic bags or those recycled bags with me when I go out; I've been doing this for a year or so, but every now and then, I may forget.

Just last night, I was watching a documentary on Nekflix on the topic of plastics and the negative health affects on people, from infants to adults. It's really quite unnerving to know how some companies knowingly use chemicals that are harmful, then attempt to shift the blame on the consumer.

I went to a nearby deli just a few days ago; as I made my purchase, I told the merchant that I don't need a bag. He then showed me a document from the State of New York, which said that a law was now in place that merchants can charge 5 cents for plastic bags. Small steps can lead to bigger ones.....

Absolutely, it all starts with awareness and then taking small steps to bring about change. If we all play our part change comes quicker

Valina,
I already do this too. We all need to actively cut back on our plastic usage.
Erica

Good to hear. Thank you for your contribution
