Day 2 Adopting New Habits

Today we are looking at the habit of tithing.

When I first heard of tithing some years ago it was in connection with the church. It was explained to me as a practice where people were required to give a certain percentage of their income to the church. In Germany you have to enter on your tax information which religion you belong to and the percentage is deducted from your salary!

As a free spirit this seemed really odd to me as I felt something like this ought to be voluntary and not forced.

Some months back someone explained the practice of tithing to me in a very different way (and I have to admit that I am older so my perception has also changed!)

I now see tithing as something I really enjoy doing. It is in no way tied to any religious practice. I set aside a small percentage of any income I receive and share this with someone who inspires me. My list is very varied. In the past it has been the friendly road sweeper lady who always greets me and does her work with a smile, the lady who makes her space available for my weekly women's group, an organisation which supports underprivileged children, a couple of free online services, an elderly lady who despite her age and difficulty in walking, is strongly involved in community work,...these are just a few examples.

The thing is I get to choose who to share with. And I really love this habit. I really look forward to seeing who I can share with at the end of each week. No matter how small the amount, I note any income I receive during the week, work out the percentage at the end of the week and share this with others.

Have you heard of tithing before? Is it a habit you would be interested in adopting? Of course you don't have to answer that question here. Maybe just something to think about, or not!

Wishing us all a wonderful day.

Greets

Hi vee what a lovely post thank you, sort of roll with the adage that the best thing we can give is of ourselves and our time.

Yes i agree. Our time is so precious that giving it is indeed a great gift.

Giving is medicine to the soul and has a way of coming back to you 10 fold.

Thaatttssss right!!

Excellent post Vee!

As a Christian, I believe and understand the importance of tithing; at it's most basic form, I see it as a way to honor GOD and show my gratitude. When I give, I don't see it as me giving to the church, but to GOD, the church is just a vessel that GOD uses, and I trust that those responsible, will use it in a manner that pleases GOD. Should the abuse that priveledge, they would have to answer to Him.

I like your attitude towards giving to people whom may be on your heart, that makes tithing more personal. I've done that as well. So even if you are not affiliated with a church, you can still give to others regularly.

Yes, giving im my opinion is not limited by any norms -
we can just as easily give of ourselves, our time, our talents, our produce, our wealth, our abundance, our vision...
thanks for sharing your thoughts V.

Hi Vee, I like your post. Tithing, in the bible means giving away 10% of what you earn. Irv.

Yep. I have extended it to beyond what I earn to 10% of my income - this could include money I receive as a gift. I also give just for the sake of it of other things I have - food, plants, produce from my garden. That is part of the joy that we can give of any and everything.

I was brought up with giving back for the blessings I've receive every day.

Then you are truly blessed to have that background and attitude. :)
