I am writing contents on my website and normally there are around 1400 words. If I write one post with only 900 or 1000 words, does that has anything to do with my ranking? Key

Hi Goran

This is a tricky question to answer. It's a little like asking 'how long is a piece of string?'

Any of the answers below could help, however, different keywords have different levels of complexity and different numbers of words as a result.

So it depends on the keyword, and perhaps the best way to evaluate this would be to take your keyword, go through the top results in Google, and decide from there.
:-)
Richard

Richard, i can answer the question of how long is a piece of string....
twice as long from the middle to the end.....
now if i could only answer how long is it from the end to the middle........:)
phil
but as you say have a look in google ...or even the search analysis tab of jaaxy as well

LOL Phil,
I guess that might imply posts can be anything between half as long and twice as long as an unspecified number of words then eh?

Thanks for mentioning Jaaxy as well.
:-)
Richard

If it takes 1,400 words to properly address the topic, then that's the right number of words.

It all depends on the type of article you're trying to write. Can you answer the user queries in 500 words? If so, it could possibly rank on Google.

Word count is not a major ranking factor (if it's one at all) in todays' Google's SEO algorithm.

You can check out my experience here. Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Kenny.

I think that you have good answers here. To add to this. I learned not too long ago that it is recommended to have a pillar post. That is 1 post that can tie all your content together via internal links. This post typically can be 8000-10000 words long. Of course you have to have a fair amount of content to begin to write this.

hmmm...looking throgh the other replies i don't see the answer i will give....
i agree that there is no definitive number but...
for the keyword you are going for you do check out the others you are trying to beat on page one of google don't you...
in jaaxy go to search analysis and put in your keyword and look at the number of words in each of the posts....
and that is the sort of content that google is looking for....
then visit them and see what they are creating ....just the headlines will do, they should give you the overall story...
then outwrite them...
that is your purpose with the post...to get ranked on page one...
so what can you write that is better than what is on there...more relevant...more informational...more helpful....more sharable.....
that is what is in your post and how many words...
so always check out the competition and out write and out class them....
good luck
phli

The guidelines are a minimum of 1500 words but I guess it has a lot to do with the niche you have selected as well. What many do is they get their keyword and key into the search engine and look at posts/reviews that you are competing with, find out how many words that post has and write more.

There are little different on how many words there should be in a content. Some say 700, some say 1500 to 2000. Does it affect the ranking a lot if it is less than 1500?

I try to limit each post to 1,000!words. But I have maybe 3-4 posts that were over 1,000 due to the Necessity of more information that needed to be included.

Hi - there is no reason to limit your posts to 1000 words. Google loves longer content, it shows you are an authority on your subject. And as I said earlier, the average length of a post on page 1 of Google is 1447 words.

Thank you, Diane. It is good to know. I think a year ago people were saying not to exceed 1,000 words and it stuck in my mind. I have been fixing all of my posts because I changed my theme. The ones with over 1,000 words I tried to shorten a bit. So now I can move on without worrying about the length of words.

Cheers,
Evelyn

Some good answers to ponder here, Goran!

Jeff

Hi - the recommended minimum is 1000 words. However, you may be interested to know that the average length of a post that makes it to page 1 of Google is 1447 words.

It really depends on your niche and keyword you are trying to rank for on how many words. Sometimes 5000 words is what you need to compete. The rule of thumb at WA is 1000-2000 words. In the MMO niche everything is more competitive so more is always better. Advice is check out your competitors and see how many words they use to get traffic.

Is it okay to use many low hanging keyword additionally to main keyword? Will that increase your traffic?

HI, I would go for a keyword an article.

It goes in title and again in first or first paragraph then write freely.

Watch out for "Keyword Stuffing" too, Goran! apparently Google frowns upon this!

Jeff

All words in your article will be searchable and have the potential to increase your traffic . It is advised to have one keyword as the main keyword.

Thank you HildeRegine

How many keywords you should use is realted to the length of your article. But your question was if it is ok to use other keywords as well. I would not do it.

From the OEC training here at WA and advice from classes on the topic, as well as other resources on the Internet. Stick to the one keyword you have decided on using. If you have several keywords, you will confuse both the search engine bots crawling your article and also potential visitors to your website.

Roy

Thank you!

You are welcome, Goran :-)
