Why Googlmans?

Hi, my name is Paul.

People always ask me why I chose Googlmans as my username.

I usually have to start with responses like;

No, I don't currently or ever have worked at Google.

No, it is not my real name.

No, I didn't mispell it.

The reason I am using that username goes back many years.

Way back to when most people never even heard or knew about Google.

It's hard to believe today that there was ever a time when Google wasn't part of every day conversations.

Indeed, there was a time when people didn't know much about Google, guess I'm dating myself a little here.

Except I had already knew about and was using it as my main search engine.

Others were using search engines like Ask Jeeves, Altavista, and Webcrawler to name a few.

As you may be aware, the results for queries at that time, with those other search engines didn't provide such user friendly results we all know today.

When people at my work wanted to find information using the other search engines they were provided results that were not helpful.

Except, I would be using Google and slowly word got around that I knew all the answers.

I showed them Google but they still didn't seem to know how to write the query to ensure they get the proper results, even with Google at the beginning anyway.

So they would still come to me as they knew I could type in the proper query string to get real answers.

We don't have that problem anymore. Now you just have to thinl about what you want to ask and Google already has the results.

Seeing that my last name ends in "mans" someone called me "Googlemans".

It didn't take long that everyone was calling Googlemans and it was actually easier for people to pronounce that name instead of my real "Heuvelmans" name so I was ok with it.

At least they were able to pornouce that name easier. ;)

Hahaha...I laugh everytime I think of this, the reason I took the "e" out of the name is because I had created a GMail email account with "Googlemans" as user name.

Somehow, I forgot the sign-in information and wasn't on my own computer so I just created a new one with Googlmans and just staid with it spelled that way.

When I tried to recreate or get the information for the Googlemans account it was telling me it was already taken.

So that is why Googlmans has become my username.

Do you have an interesting story why you chose your username?

If you do, please put them in the comments. I would love to hear about them.

Cheers

Paul

Great story Paul!!

When I first started, I was trying to create a username to get up and running and my name (Melissa) taken. So I took most of the letters out and now everyone thinks my name is Mia. I don't mind though it's kinda fun!

Ya. Mia is nice. Great idea to take letters out.

That's a great story Paul, and I think your username is great too. I can't recall what I used before Google, but if I think long enough I probably could remember. My first experience with the internet was the very early nineties when I was working in administration at a boarding school. It was very different to when I started working online for myself, and in control of tools and programmes I chose to use.

Knowing what it looked like in the 80s or 90s makes one wonder what computing will look like in another 20 or 30 years from now.
Will we remember Google?

I remember the first time I ever used Google. I was on holiday in the Greek islands and saw the most amazing multimillion pound yacht. I wondered who it belonged to and when I returned home, somebody suggested I Google it, and there was the answer! Among my friends I am known as the queen of the internet!

Good to hear from you Queen of the internet.

And I haven't even explained my username! Any guesses?

Paul,

It is so funny because I was ready to Spam you LOL sorry
but once I started to read your blog post I was then fascinated.

My user name came from my little girl dog she just turned 2

Not near as good as yours :)

Thank you for sharing,
Susan
