I am using the Omega theme, but want some color and personality. The lessons so far have not shown me how to do anything other than how to add media to my posts. It does not

Hi Teresa, had a look at your site and the content is very interesting and informative, but I think there are one or two things that may help to improve its appearance.

Although the use of white space is an important factor in web design, using a sidebar can help alleviate too much white space and improve the balance of pages and posts.

You could try changing the color of your headings to, say, a shade of blue, and increase the size of the sub-headings slightly and capitalize them, this would give your pages and posts some color.

Try to keep your paragraphs to a maximum of six lines, seven at the most, interspersed with a sub-head occasionally. Large blocks of uninterrupted text don't go down well on a website and may cause visitors to hit the back button.

These are purely personal opinions, it's your site Teresa, and you should go with whatever you feel happy with. I hope this helps, and if I can be of any help, give me a shout.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out. Will work toward implementing your suggestions!

Hi Teresa, if you need any help implementing them, give me a shout.

Most theme colors can be adjusted through appearance in your website's dashboard this will allow you to change background colors but just a word of caution, I have always found that readers like black on white or blue on white so you might want to keep that in mind.
When I first started I thought color was the key but found out shortly from a critique by Carson that black on white is the most effective setting, just look at WA's website, simple blue and white with color only used for the buttons, why? because that makes your call to actions or what you want your readers to notice that more prevalent, that's Internet marketing Teresa!

Thank you Mike. I am moving a little slow but still excited about the possibilities here. Appreciate your input.

Thank you both--will take your advice. And all of this is a new concept to me! haha

Hiya. With the Omega theme you can have many choices of 'Child Theme'. These give you colour and style options to choose from and protect your site from changes made to the parent theme. If this is a new concept for you then it is covered later. You can also put 'child theme' in the question box and see the discussions about this topic.

Color and other amenities are usually in your theme customizer. Take a good look at it. You'll find some good and not so good things to use for dressing up your site. Have fun with it.

One of my original published pages would function better as a post to show up on my home page. How can I delete the page and get the content to a post to show up on my home pa

You could just copy and paste it in a post but make sure you really change up the structure and content and you will want to give it a new title the problem with just making a page a post I feel is that Google could misconstrue your efforts as duplicate content which would hurt your sites ranking be different if the page wasn't published, hope that helps, Mike.

Thank you!--good advice.

There is a Word Press plugin called" post type switcher" that I used to convert posts to pages and it also goes pages to posts. You just add it and activate . After you are done you just delete the plug in.
This way everything stays as it is except the post or page change. It worked well.

Marty

I have done this also. Just copy and paste, but be sure to delete the page you don't want anymore. If google sees it, they may call it duplicate content.
Barry

Oh! Thank you both--what a simple answer. I will do that.

That is what a do a few times as well just copy and past

Maybe there are smarter ways to do it, but my simple solution would be to cut and paste the text in a post and publish that. You can then decide whether or not to delete the page.

I am having trouble locating free stock photos I can use for my website from the sources given to us in the lesson. I am able to find nice, relevant photos on other sites, spe

Thank you everyone for your comments--very helpful. I will be sure to take your advice. I am loving the input from more experienced people!

That's a touchy subject and copyright could come into play depending what type of picture it is. If you are looking for a picture of a product most of the time the company would be ok with their product being showcased, you might want to look into taking a screenshot of that product or contact the product owner for their help in getting access. You can go to Amazon for instance and get a screenshot of a product to promote.

You just can't use photos from websites, you can't see if the are copyrighted
Here is a list of sites which provide photos, you have to check yourself if you have to give credit at some sites

At the top of the WA screen is a white search bar. Enter "free stock photos" there and you will find a ton of useful leads for your search.

Search in Google Images, > Search Tools > Usage Rights > Labelled for reuse.
This should give you pictures you can reuse on your website.

I am about to start lesson 6 of Level 2 and still have no content on my home page. I have 3 other pages with content, but I am just not sure how to get content on the home pag

Thanks for the help everybody! I am a little hesitant to experiment since I don't want to mess up what I have already created, but I guess as time goes on and I learn more, I will get over that. Also, I guess whatever I do can be undone if I don't like it. Appreciate you all taking the time to help me.

Depending on your theme you could have a nice colorful header and side menu which you can pick in the dashboard under appearance. You could also set up a scrolling blog roll which has your latest post you can set that to how ever many posts you want shown at any given time and as you add a new post it will always show up at the top of the post roll, keeps your site looking fresh and not static, hope that helps Mike.

Just write a post and not a page. All posts will be listed on your home page which is your blog roll.

Hi,
The home page is usually the blog post page and not a "page" page. Every time you write a post to your blog, the most current post will be displayed here. You can also stick a post so it will always be the first page on your blog.

If you would rather have a static page for the home page, using one of your pages, you can assign one of your pages as the home or front page. You can make one of your other pages the blog page by making a blank page and setting it as the blog page.
