Weekly Website Crash

Since September 21st, I have had one of my websites go down 5 times.

Instead of displaying my home page, all I see is a big error message saying:

Error establishing a database connection

Technical support again tells me it was a temporary issue.

A seemingly weekly event does not appear to be a temporay issue.

This is frustrating and annoying. Especially, when trying to call it a day and wanting to do something else like eating dinner.

While techical support response is quick, it is also reactive to my submitting a support request. If I hadn't checked my site, it would have been down overnight and possibly longer.

Just venting.

No the feeling.

I believe we will succeed together

Install Autoptimize plugin and clean out your database. I hope that helps. Otherwise look for another plugin that cleans the database.

I use WPoptimize, and I clean my site out on a regular basis. As far as I can tell, it's been behaving fine.

Thanks, Marion. I have installed and cleaned up the db.

Let me know if you have any more crashes.

OK. Thanks, Marion!

Great to see you sorted it out Glen

This has happened to me (very) often over the last several years that I have been here.

I always submit a ticket, and it does get resolved in time. It appears that the WA servers become overwhelmed more than occasionally. In my opinion, this issue requires more attention than it's getting.

If I were to ever switch hosting services, this would be the reason.

Your site could be getting bogged down with unnecessary components, which will cause it to stall. Clean it out, as Marion suggests.

This is an instance where I wish we had a cPanel for our websites. I guess I am just old school.

Have you read this blog by Marion as it may help- Not sure but worth looking at

I read Marion's blog and then checked my sites. That is when I found my site was down. I have no idea how long my site had been down.

There may be some residual php files from non-Wp applications that are causing problems. Tech support gave me a list. I created the website in 2010. So who knows what's on there. Plus, I moved this site to WA when I joined 2 years ago. In hindsight, I probably should have left it on the other host.

Speaking of hindsight...

Thanks for sharing, Glen.

You are welcome, Roger. I hope all is well with you. I haven't seen you around much.

It is really frustration situation, you will need to update WordPress, check every day for security.
Jacqueline

Thanks, Jacqueline. All my WP installs are up to date as are the plugins.

Annoying. It pays to be vigilant. I just saw the post about hacking and two of mine had been hacked. Fortunately no damage that I can see. One had Wordfence and that one added another user.

Don't forget to change your passwords...

Several years ago, I had one of my websites hacked 3 times in one month. My website was on a shared server that had weak security. The hosting company moved my site to another server. But the damage had been done. So I switched to another company.

Being hacked three times must have been an awful feeling. Was your site very popular, with plenty of traffic, Glen?

It was a relatively new site with traffic trending up. So being hacked so often killed off the traffic.

I'm sorry to heaŕ that, but at least it wasn'r one which you had dedicated years of your life to it.

This was happening to me very often and every time I submitted a ticket to site support they would get back to me and tell me it seemed to be working fine and to check again.

I would check and it would be fine but it would invariably happen again later, sometimes causing me to lose updates I had just made to posts.

And again I would get the same response from site support. I ended up having to get a little angry at them and tell them they were not being helpful in solving the longterm issue.

After that, they did something new to my site and it hasn't crashed since. I'm not sure what they did but maybe try being a little bit sterner in your messages to site support and see if it gets worked out after that.

Sounds like you got their attention.

I am about to go a bit crazy at them....aaaaaaaaaaaa they are just sending me this copy-paste messages, like: everything is fine our side...blah blah. Not one useful tip in around ten messages. Honestly.

Anyhow, I better go and have a glass of water before I write my next response to them hehe

Best,
Alenka

That's exactly what I was getting! Tell them that they're not being helpful and that you are upset and frustrated.
