Deleted My Website
I decided to pull the plug on a website this evening.
It had crashed 7 times in 14 days. And by crashed, I mean I could not log into the WordPress Admin area, or there was a database error message, or if I got in, I couldn't do anything except move the mouse around the screen.
My site had been hacked according to Site Support. Some of the .php files were rewritten and malware added to the site.
The source of the hack may have been an older plug-in. My guess it was a redirection plugin.
I copied some of the page and post text and saved to a text file should I decide to rewrite the content.
I decided I will hit the delete button.
This was an 8-year old site with lots of old files and junk.
Onward and upward with a fresh start!

So sorry about that. I'm wondering if before deleting it, if site support could have restored it from a backup? Just a thought. Anyway, move forward. All the best to you.

Thanks, Yvette. Support was doing lots of stuff with my site. I just don't think they found the malware infections.
That is a bummer. Just curious...did you contact support before pulling the plug? They can usually solve most problems around here.

I was in contact with support almost daily for 2 weeks. I tried editing several posts today, but couldn't because of corrupted files. I just don't have time to struggle with this site every day. So I decided to pull the plug.

That is so sad - I know that everyone needs plugins for their
websites to make them look the way they want - being new
I am a fairly simple type of person and now I am beginning
to see that the fancier people tend to be with plugins and
all the more headaches it can cause in the end.
So very sorry you lost your website - praying that a rebuild
will be so much easier than what you are thinking :)

Thank you, Susan. I think it will be easier to start over than fix what was broken. It was an old site with lots of unused files.
Sorry to hear about this, Glen. At least you have some of the material and can reuse it if you decide to build another website.
Just a question though. If you delete a website is it gone as in gone? Do you still own the Domain name or is that gone as well?

Wayne, the domain name stays until the renewal time. I let a domain name go years ago when I did not renew it. Yes, the website is gone, all files deleted from the server.
But, it sounded like you copied and saved some or all of the content. Did I read that correctly? If so, great idea.

Glen, so sorry you felt the need to do that. No matter what state it is in it's always difficult to let a website go. We have had to do that and we sympathize. But, as you say, "onward and upward".

Yes, it was difficult. It was an 8-year-old site and needed refreshing. So I will do it differently this time.
