A word on feedback - Follow your convictions

I have always found feedback left on the Siterubix platform most useful. As n almost newbie, I know I can still do with all the help I can get here.

But sometimes feedback you receive can be clashing, as it may all come down to the individual's preferences. I shall explain.

On my first website on border terriers and dogs more generally, I inserted recent post and categories widgets from day one, as they are the most commonly used and can assist the viewer in navigating through the site. When I find these two widgets on other people's site, I use the most and see the point of them.

But a recent feedback advised, in quite strong words (don't get me wrong, only strong as believing in the point that was being made, not rude at all) that after nearly a year of life of my website, I should remove such widgets as nobody is interested and they made my website not as dinamic.

Hey presto, I removed my widgets straightaway. My thinking process was: this person sounds like they have more experience than me, they know what they are talking about, surely I should oblige.

But then yesterday I received the latest feedback advising exactly the opposite. I should install recent posts and categories widgets as they would help my viewers width navigation!!!

Moral of the story

To me, there are a couple of lessons to this:

1. The power of words - With the right words you can make your reader believe anything at all. Which can work both ways. As people that earn their living through words, we should be aware that if we use our words powerfully in our writing, we can sound more convincing and attract more traffic. But we should also be aware, as readers, that not all that we read may be true.

2. Follow your convictions - sometimes feedback is conflicting from one person to another, as it reflects their individual interpretation and view of matters. You may agree with some feedback or not, because ultimately it is your website, your niche, your 'baby', and only you will know what is best for your pages and posts. Sometimes, no matter how many feedbacks you receive, you should just follow your hunch, that tingling feeling at the back of your head, or at the pit of your stomach, wherever in your body you get it (#lol).

I hope I'm not putting off anybody from keeping leaving feedback on my site. To both members that left the above mentioned feedbacks, if you recognise yourselves in this blog, let me tell you that your feedback was most welcome, and did give me a different perspective of how things can be done.

And to all of you out there, do keep leaving feedback on my sites - each and every of them is most appreciated, as they all teach me something! And by all means, leave comments below, and click the green Like This button, to share your views and feedback on this blog.

Good advise Giulia,
Although we appreciate constructive feedback, it might not necessarily lead to positive results. We have to be able to differentiate between what will be helpful and what's won't. We all view things in different ways. Thank you for this helpful post.
Jerome

I'm glad you enjoyed it Jerome. I suppose it's a case of seeking through what may work right and what will not work out right for us.

Thank for sharing.

You are most welcome!

People will have different ways of doing things. Depending on your niche or any other given factor, what works for one may not work for another.

I think you got it right....follow your instinct.

~Debbi

Yep, try different approach but ultimately listen to yourself, is my new motto!

Maybe some of the best feedback might come from the people who share your interest.

Yes, that's true as well. Some dog lovers like me may see things more my way!

Giulia,
I've had a similar experience with feedback; different opinions that contradict each other. Ultimately I just try to go with my gut about which direction to move in.
Erica

Yes, I think I shall go with that stance as well. Thanks, Erica!

Giulia - Thanks for posting. There are many points of view in the world and we should all keep an open mind and listen to them.
Much can be learned from the most experienced and successful among us (think Kyle/Carson/Jay), but in the end it should be your own vision and preferences that ultimately prevail. Feedback is good, but one should weigh all the factors and then make the best choice. Go slow, learn all you can, do what you think is right and make the necessary adjustments along the way.

Yes you are right Patrick. And then who knows, what I might end up doing is adopt the trial and error technique- give it a go with some suggestion, or try something else if that format doesn't work.

Yes , absolutely agree , stick basically to your own gut feeling but it is good to receive the perspective from another angle .
In other words you have to keep a flexible mind.

Absolutely Angie, the more you hear, the more you learn - which is key to this business - the best decision you can then make :)

Good one

Thank you Alexandra!

AMEN!

Thank you Arthur!

Funny how easily we can be convinced that our gut instinct is wrong. But, listen... You tried someone else's suggestion. Nothing wrong with that. Now you can make an even more educated decision about which direction works best for you.

And you have helped the rest of us by posting your thoughts about this experience. So...

Thank you, Giulia!

Hal

That's a very positive way of seeing it. Just my way of doing!
Thank you Hal, much appreciated :)
