Someone just advised me to use Shareaholic instead of AddThis.

Because your home page receives the highest traffic, you need to keep it very clean and lightweight ( I mean minimum HTTP requests, minimum JS & CSS loaded files ) ]
1) I have read not very favorable things about Shareaholic.
2) What are HTTP requests, JS & CSS loaded files ?

I haven't heard of Shareaholic, I am not quite sure what you want to do? If you are wanting to share your posts via a social network, I have found the plugin Revive Old Post to be simple to use and effective. And I also use Hootsuite to share posts and any other useful information I might pick up from other sites.

Hi Sue ... this plugin talks a good talk , but the ratings are not that good ... I have not used it personally , but word of mouth is SOMETIMES useful ...

I had it and removed it... Too much bloat, I thought... I'm not anti-plug-in, but, I didn't like this one... I'd rather use something a bit more subtle...

I've read negative things about Shareaholic and been telling others to avoid using it.
But then, I've also read negative things about JetPack but many are happy using it.
