I love all my friends here in WA, but for this question, I guess I'm calling on my Canadian affiliate marketer friends! I am trying to join some affiliate marketing networks in the US (CJ, Flexoffers...), and they need a Tax ID number. Not sure where to find it or how to get that? Please tell me how you did this?

Thanks!:)

If you are talking about your Canadian business/GST tax ID, go to the revenue canada site and apply for one. It's a simple form to fill out online and they will give you a Tax ID#. It should be a 9 digit number with R0001 after the 9 digits.

Hmm, you got me concerned truthfully.
Do we need to do this for online marketing though?

Just think of the amount of GST you pay each month. I spend enough money in 3 months (1 quarter) to file for and get back sometimes as much as $350.00 per quarter year. Once you are registered, you write off all the GST you spend. Just hang on to the receipts to prove your expenditures. It's different from your household GST rebate, and does not affect it. Just come up with a business name and register. You can also register as yourself dba..........

Thanks, Ian!
Great of you to share this GST workaround with us:)
Makes total sense. What is your last term there:"dba" please?

So the big question is: Is THIS the number "Tax ID number" the affiliate networks want from us? Ian, you mentioned '9 digits', and this is what I see on the W-8BEN form.
So our SIN number would not be sufficient?

THANKS for clearing this up if you can, pal, because I'm finding out there are a LOT of us at WA that need the answer.

The BEST to you, Mr. Budget Chef:)

dba means 'doing business as'. The SIN number won't work. I thought that was what they wanted, but I was told different. I gave them my business GST registration and it worked. They want the number only, without the RT0001 suffix. They need your business tax ID to register you as a non-American (USA) affiliate. Otherwise, we would pay their taxes too, which would be a real downer, as they charge about 40% more.

Interesting! Thanks for the info!
So, what are the EXACT steps with Amazon then?
First I register a business, then get business ID, then submit it to Amazon? I didn't know we pay taxes with Amazon's stuff - usually people blogged about just receiving checks!

We don't pay taxes with them. The tax ID is to keep Uncle Sam from TAXING us as US citizens.

Well, on Amazon I show that I am a non-US citizen, and I simply provided the SIN there. Am I fine?

YES - gracious!$!
Thank you, Ian.
I'll be interested to kindly hear from you about the apparent acceptance of our SIN numbers by Amazon. Because Zarina is sharing her experience (Hi, Z!)...and I know more folks that 'got around' that step with Amazon.
Maybe the proof would be if anyone has actually got any payouts from Amazon yet!;)

Hey Terry - I will personally research this question later too! Ian kind of got me concerned - I mean getting taxed twice isn't much fun!

Sorry if I confused you Kasotty. By giving the American companies your Canadian tax/GST ID, you avoid taxes in both domains until you reach above $30,000 in income in one year here in Canada. THEN the Canadian government will ask you to submit a tax form for your earnings and tax you accordingly, but not as an individual. They are looking at your company name as the taxable entity, not the owner. Hope this eases your mind.

Not sure. I'd check with Amazon on that. I gave them my tax ID. The problem is that both countries have SIN numbers that are 9 digits long. We go 333-333-333, they go 4444-22-333. That can confuse the issue if they read the SIN as American. It won't match up to the name on the American file. When you are born in the States, you get that number and it follows you throughout your life.

Thank you,Ian. So when I fill out that GST form online, will that take a few weeks to process?
Reply
Bigbroian Premium
Not even. I got my tax ID in less than 2 weeks.

So this is very hopeful! And you are very helpful, Ian - thank you:)
Just gotta ask...do you know the actual name of that form we should be after? No worries, eh:)

No problem, Terry. I keep the CRA on 'speed dial' on my bookmarks. The site is: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/gst-tps/rgstrng/menu-eng.html
Read through the page to get an understanding of the process, then go to the bottom, find the 'Register Online' button and click on it. Follow the instructions to get registered.
I suggest that you use your own name for ease of registry, and put a dba name after that. It is self-explanatory once you get on the site.

Hey Keith - don't be shy, pal!
How are you?
Thanks for popping 'round...so you agree that I would use my SIN number too?
Because we're always told to be careful sharing that out...

Yup - I believe that our SIN number is used for tax purposes. Back in the ukulele it was our national insurance number - same thing.

Just looked at your website - the old blokes look fantastic and it looks like you are getting some traffic - would you like me to leave a comment?

For myself, I got all confused about what my niche should be, made a couple of false starts and decided to do the boot camp because that would take me all the way through the process.

So I have built a website and am now in the process of populating. Looking through the other WA websites, they seem to follow a recipe, so I'm currently trying to find a different way to target my demographic (old people who want to know about kitchen floors).

Stay cool Terry.

By the way, Terry, do you know of this training that I created specifically for WA Canadian affiliate marketers here? This is a very valuable info if you want to work around Paypal's hefty 2.5% conversion rate. Thought you should know!
