For the longest time, image use was a real bugbear for me.I had a lot of hangups about it and as a result, never really used many images until I finally took the plunge and paid for a membership at a photo site. I was so happy and so relieved when WA added photos to SiteContent. Now I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Except....

The other day, I was reading up on a couple of different thinks, including some new technology in development. I thought it would be something interesting to write about on my site, but then I realised that I probably wouldn't be able to use any images for the article, which would make it a bit dull.

The item that I was going to write about is not something that can currently be purchased. There are no photos anywhere on SiteContent or other photo sites. The few articles that I read mostly used the same photos in each, so there seem to only be a few available.

What can one do in situations like this? In this particular case, I could do what one of the articles did and link to a YouTube video, but in general, if you are reporting on something that is new in the news, where would you get images? Or would you simply forgo their use?

Is the topic something computer related? Is it something internet related? You could do a general photo of computers or something that makes one think of electricity/data traveling/internet (you know those idealized drawings of electricity/data traveling through a cable with blue light etc?) that is in that arena even if it isn't of the specific item itself. I know this sounds basic so sorry if I am missing the point of your question!

No, I know I was being vague.

I don't remember how the topic came up, but I was reading about batteries because I had heard about batteries in development that are supposed to be able to charge almost instantly.

This led me to an article about electric cars and it was talking about fluid electrolytes that could be used to power electric cars. It's pretty neat. Basically it's a liquid that powers your car and once there is no charge left, you can go to what would basically be a normal gas station and swap your discharged fluid for a new batch. The discharged fluid would then be brought to solar farms or wind farms and re-energized to be used again.

This is great because instead of having to spend a long time charging the car;s battery, you can just take a couple of minutes to swap the liquid, just like filling up with gas, plus, they think it should be able to use the existing infrastructure (gas stations, trucks, etc) thus eliminating the huge cost of getting it into place.

Anyhow, because this is not really a product that one can gab a picture off of Amazon for, I started questioning how to do it. Sure, I could just use an image of an existing electric car, show some picture of trees (it's green!) and whatever, but if I wanted to show specific images directly related to the story, I wouldn't know where to get them, though the idea someone else mentioned of taking screenshots from the news video might work.

Oh, I see. That is a cool idea! It makes me think of the new solar technology that can power buildings where algae is housed in clear tubes on the outside of these buildings. The algae grows in the sunlight and produces hydrogen which can be used to power fuel cells. http://www.wired.co.uk/article/forget-solar-panels-this-house-runs-on-algae

There are pictures of these tubes filled with light green algae too. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/244883298460873591/

This isn't the same thing but it made me think of it. I wonder if you can just use a picture of a logo or lettering instead of an actual picture of the technology in your case?

I'm not sure. Perhaps.
I guess either that, or just the more generic photos that seem somewhat related.

Craig let me share how I go about finding photos for the articles I write. I hope it helps. (my 2 cents worth)

Recently I was writing something on oppression. I needed some pictures. First I keyed this word in google and looked at the images tab to see what pictures came out. I try to look for ideas in these pictures. Most of the pictures are license protected but I was more looking out for the idea. One picture of people chained -idea people chained. Another picture was a cartoon of a hooded skull with a knife -idea the devil. Another a picture of boot with people under - idea (a bully)

With these ideas I go to the free site content and key in the idea words to try to find related pictures. Many a time I found my pictures for the articles.

hope this helps.

I have been using my own photos before images were introduced into site content. I was writing on obesity in children but couldn't find any. No fat kids, obese children, or big kids. I used one playing child and worked around that. It looked fine.

Either ask the company or take my own images. When you take yyour own images you own them, so there is no conflict there.

Just a note... be careful about model releases if you have people in the images that you have taken you should get permission and a model release signed to use them in a business sense or online. Basically it states that they give you permission to use the image of them online.

I would ask the company.

Maybe have a theme in your mind of what the subject matter is .. and design your own images.. maybe canva dot com?

I have done this in the past when I have struggled for image ideas and availability..

For the best part.... I take my own photographs for my website though!

You could pause the video and try to take screenshots, check for press release images ( most likely that is where the images the other articles used) contact the company, otherwise, use relevant images with captions that explain not the actual product....

Actually, a screenshot of the video is an interesting idea... I wouldn't have thought of that.
