can you buy a domain name for longer than a year? I worry that if I purchase one and it does well that the following year they would charge me a hugely inflated price to keep it. How do you get round this?

Yes, you can. If you bought a domain name from namecheap.com, I think it's the same amount you have to pay for another year of renewal. But you have to pay additional amount for WhoisGuard Subscriptions when you renew your WhoisGuard Subscription which is free during the first year of domain name registration.

Well its recommended that you at least get it for 2 years. I heard the longer the site is registered the better. I believe affects rankings of your page on Google.I'm not sure how though.

That's an old SEO myth that has never been substantiated.

From Matt Cutts via Moz:

"The notion that domain registration length matters as an SEO factor is a myth. When asked about domain registration length, Google's Matt Cutts said, "To the best of my knowledge, no search engine has ever confirmed that they use length of registration as a factor in scoring. If a company is asserting that as a fact, that would be troubling. The primary reason to renew a domain would be if it's your main domain, you plan to keep it for a while, or you'd prefer the convenience of renewing so that you don't need to stress about your domain expiring."

Yeah, that is irrelevant. Google ranks your domain on it's authority (which does happen with time and as you build out your content), the quality of the content on your website and the engagement you get within your content.

There is a lot of BS that is floating around out there and the domain "length" has definitely always been one of these.

You can buy a domain name for more than a year no problem. Namecheap, Godaddy or any of the other registration companies offer choices for time periods and also automatic renewal.
