Wednesday Wisdom - Looking in the Mirror

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope you are all having a great day.

This is just a short post that popped into my head this morning as I was getting up and ready for the day. I hope it helps you in some way.

So, let’s start with a little honesty... when you looked in the mirror in the morning, what’s the first thing that went through your mind?

  • Was it, “Good morning, future entrepreneur of the year!”
  • Or was it more like, “Oh dear... I look like I’ve wrestled with my pillow and lost”
  • Or even, "Ugh - you again!"

We’ve all been there. Listening to that little voice in our heads that never, ever goes away and more often than not, tears us down rather than lifts us up!

But here’s the thing – what you tell yourself in moments like these can make or break your day, your week and actually, your life.

If you look in the mirror and think, “I’m rubbish", or "I'm not good enough,” your brain quietly goes, “Got it!” and spends the day proving you right – by feeding your self-doubt, provoking your procrastination, or bringing you situations that reinforce your initial view. It steers you in the direction you told it to - which was "I'm not good enough."

But if you look at yourself and say, “I’m doing OK. I'm learning, growing, and building something amazing,” you step into a completely different energy. You start acting like the business owner that you already are – creative and ready to face the world, not the one that's full of fear and doubt and holding you back at every turn.

Self-love is not selfish

Self-love and positive self-talk are not selfish. They are self-affirming and vital if you want to live the life you dream of.

They are not about pretending everything’s perfect and ignoring the things you're experiencing. You do need to honestly understand where you are. But self-love and positive self-talk are about recognising the things you are doing well despite your current situation, and seeing the courage it takes to keep showing up, even on the days when your hair (and maybe your motivation) could do with a makeover!

Your subconscious takes your self-talk as an order and follows it - so make sure you're giving it the right kind of orders!

disney style and funny image of a woman looking in the mirror - she is in pyjamas and her hair is a mess, but she is saying to herself "Looking good and ready to take on the world!"

So tomorrow morning, when you catch your reflection in the mirror, take a breath... smile... and say something KIND to yourself. Be your own best friend for once!

  • Recognise the dreamer who’s still getting up and moving forward
  • See the creator who refuses to give up
  • See the entrepreneur who’s finding their way one step, one post, or one jar of coffee/hair gel at a time!

Because that's the real YOU!

And your success starts with what you see in that mirror and what you choose to believe about the person looking back.

Question for you:
What’s the first thing you usually tell yourself in the mirror? Be honest – is it a pep talk to your best friend, or are you repeating negative talk you've heard from someone else? And if so, isn't it time to change the record?!

Have a truly wonderful Wednesday.

Gail

That’s awesome, Gail a few days late lol but I really love how you wrote this it’s real, it’s funny, and it hits deep at the same time. I think we all wrestle with that mirror moment, but you’re right what we tell ourselves first thing sets the whole tone for the day. Thanks for the reminder to start it with some kindness and a little faith in who we’re becoming.

You're welcome. Being kind to yourself can be done at any time of day too!

Hello Gail. I usually barely look at myself in the mirror in the morning - I read your post yesterday and attempted to smile at myself this morning. This was much easier to do when I woke up with the sun shining than when it's dark and cold and raining. So I talked to myself 'kindly' at lunchtime telling myself I'll get lots done today before I start teaching at 4.30.

Thanks for the reminder. You are absolutely right - it makes you feel better instantly. 🙂🙂

Glad you got to talk kindly to yourself at some point in the day - it doesn't always have to be first thing in the morning. I can't see without my glasses so I'm usually just a blur first thing. LOL
And you really deserve lots of kind words too because you're amazing!
Enjoy your day.

Thank you, Gail. I can relate to the 'can't see without my glasses'. I do try to talk kindly to myself and do as much as I can as well as be grateful for every day and enjoy it.

Have a great rest of the day.

WOW, thanks for the inspiration. I went to Nairobi town today and decided to buy for myself a black beaded bracelet from a lady who was selling them. I have been looking for one for a while, not sure why. I then asked, "Do you know what this tool is?" and she looked at me in the eyes and said, "Yes, I know it's a stone!"

But I insisted, "You're right, but that's just what it's made of. Do you know the device? She was a bit concerned and confessed she didn't have any idea. I then told her that it can be a great tool if used to focus the mind on something important.

She was attentive.

I told her life is a mystery and then talked her through how she could use it in the morning to focus her mind on what she wants for the rest of that day, and when done consistently, that could bring mindfulness and positive thinking, and all the goodies thereafter. She thanked me heartily.

"It's not magic but a tool!" I warned.

I shared this because it's true whether we know it or not that life is a mystery we don't understand. Whatever we tell ourselves (or other people tell us) about ourselves is like a seed. When nurtured (given a rapt attention), it germinates, sprouts, and grows into its own kind.

So true John. Where focus goes, energy flows!

You're most welcome!

Thanks, Gail. This article is like a wake up call to me. Having had a few tough days with arthritis, I had neglected the positive talks I usually have with myself.

It takes a bit to acquire a new positive habit, but can be erased in one day!

Self love is worth building.

Sorry to hear about your arthritis. I hope you feel better soon and positive self-talk can help. We all need a bit of TLC sometimes.
