Friday night in, Alexa and children. What could go wrong?

So it's Friday night and I'm sitting in my sister's house, babysitting my nephew, while she helps doing front of house for a local amateur dramatics show (yes it runs in the family!) My two children and my nephew are quietly driving Amazon's "Alexa" crazy (or is that driving ME crazy?) No sooner has one of them said "Alexa, play this track", when one of the others cuts in with "Alexa, stop - play another track". To her credit though, she dutifully obeys without question and is infinitely more patient than I am listening to between 3 and 5 seconds of each song!

When they do find a song they all like however, harmony is restored - the entire track is then played (usually up to 5 times) - and then we have dancing! And boy, is there dancing! Well, I'm a dance teacher you understand, so I have to say that the style is somewhat 'mixed' and technique is 'developing' but the enthusiasm and motivation is definitely there - along with a complete lack of self-consciousness that allows for freedom of expression and total disregard for other people's opinions, which I find priceless.

I'm reminded of that wonderful poem which goes something like:

"Sing like no one is listening.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching,
and live like heaven is on earth".

I don't know who wrote it but it's something I like to remind myself of from time to time. Too many of us don't follow through with the things we want to do because we are so afraid of what other people will think, or that they may disapprove, even if we find it makes us happy.

So maybe tonight is the night to say "So what?" if people challenge you on your choice or music, or clothes; your favourite meal or the way you want to wear your hair; or what you want to do with your live. After all, it is YOUR LIFE, so maybe it's time to live according to your own rules and values?

Wouldn't that be a liberating experience?

So go on, put on your favourite song and blast it out for all to hear, and then dance yourself happy!!

(Just remember to then put Alexa into 'not listening' mode, so you can enjoy uninterrupted bliss!)

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Definitely could use some music and dancing.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mickey

Music and dancing is in everyone's soul...only some of us have forgotten about it, sadly!

Hi Gail,
First of all thank you for beautiful and funny story. The best one of your other stories. Loved it.
Sham

Thank you Sham. So pleased you liked it. Gail

Great post, Gail--still it's troublesome when I see children constantly using Alexa or Siri for everything--I feel like it's stunting their intellectual growth!

Have a good weekend!

Jeff👍😊

There's nothing sweeter than watching your kids singing and dancing like they don't have a care in the world! When I get up and dance with them they're like 'mummm' followed by eye roll :)

Have a lovely weekend Gail.
Cheers
Melissa

Haha - mine too. I tell them it's my job to be embarrassing and I'm good at it! :)
Have a great weekend too and thanks for reading. Gail
