The "Hat Tip"
Tipping of the hat goes back to an era when people wore hats, and when men greeted each other it was courtesy to lift or tip the hat to each other as a sign of "hello". The hat tip was also a more formal greeting or salute, with men saying "I tip my hat to you", paying their respects to another person when the actual hat wasn't available.
The hat tip has become one way of acknowledging another individuals contributions online. When you draw attention to someone else's work, it is considered proper "netiquette" to gesture a hat tip to the the person who brought attention to the on-line work. Providing hat tips as a sign of admiration and recognition is often expected in some on-line circles, and has even infiltrated some of the mainstream media outlets, such as TV and newspapers.
When hat tips were used on-line they typically appeared as HT or h/t. If a blogger uses information that belongs to another source, the blogger may use the information, but then give a "hat tip" as appreciation to the source, and thus providing acknowledgment to the source. The HT can contain a link to the source's original work, as well, giving it promotional value.
Information is shared freely on the internet, and is very hard to keep up on. Finding information when it is needed can be difficult, so if someone is able to direct information to where it is needed a hat tip is a great way of saying thanks! Hat tips create a sense of community and a circle of cooperation. Hat tipping can be a great tool in a blogging communities, where networking is important to building of the blog communities.
