Have You Ruptured an Achilles Tendon?

Walkerville Beach is about 10 kilometers from my home and has to be my favorite beach for walking. .

I love its intrinsic beauty and its quietness. You can walk along this beach and be the only soul around, making it a wonderful time to draw on the beauty and quietness and connect with the spiritual dimension. .It's a time to reflect on things past and be thankful for all the blessings this life offers and also to imagine the future.

My last walk along the beach however stopped me in my tracks and has slowed up all my progress in Wealthy Affiliate.

It was 7 am and my wonderful hubby decided it was a lovely morning for a walk on the beach. I agreed and so we set out for a pleasant Saturday morning beach walk.

About 2 kilometers along my leg went bang and crumpled underneath me. I was in excruciating pain and simply could not walk or even move.

Hubby went back to get the car and drove along the beach to pick me up. It was the weekend so there was no one on duty in the local X-ray unit. I went home with some pain killers to go back on Monday. By this stage the leg had swollen significantly and was very bruised.

The solution was to wear teds and rest along with some panadol for pain.

After a month it had just started to heal and I was beginning to walk unaided when bang. It went again. Again it happened on a weekend so another wait, this time till Tuesday as it is a long weekend.

They diagnosed it as a ruptured Achilles tendon but I don't know if I am a woose or not but the pain in my leg is off the scale. This time I have been given fentanyl to combat the pain but it makes me sleepy and I am finding it very difficult to focus on WA work as my body keeps telling me to sleep.

Your answers will help me decide what is best going forward so please take time to answer just a couple of questions.

I am a nurse, I am going to assume it was a partial tear and not a full rupture since no surgery was suggested. You must let it heal before pushing it, but here in the US Physical Therapy would usually be prescribed to guide you through what is proper to do and what is not. Hope you are getting good guidance and good luck with the healing process.

Thank you Dashnow. The sonographer showed me the ultra sounds of the two tears. It has left my achilles at the upper end where it joins in with the calf muscles very shattered., or shredded might describe it better for about 4-5 inches. I saw the orthapedic surgeon yesterday,
He does not like to do surgery because of the risk of infection so it has been in a cast with my foot at an awkward angle.
I have just purchased an iwalk2 but it has not arrived yet.

Its been 6 weeks already and I am totally over it.
I can't do physio yet because it is still too fragile but I am trying to do some on the bed exercises to keep circulation going. (leg raises mainly)
I have a fentanyl patch for the pain but it also makes me drowsy.
Thank you so much for responding especially since you are a nurse and would understand what is going on with it.
I wish you well with your biz. Blessings
Judy

It sounds like you are getting good guidance, glad to hear that. Orthopedic injuries are very tricky. People think sometimes they are very straightforward but mostly they are not. It sounds like you are on the mend and I wish you well!

I haven't done that, but I tore the ACL in both knees. That was pretty bad too! Heal fast, but only do as much PT as they say; doing more will only slow down the process. Healing takes time.

Thank you Jeannine. I am a little impatient , just hate sitting around.

I know, and it is so frustrating that you can't do anything else. Think of all the research you can get done now! When you feel like it. And what a perfect excuse to watch all your favorite movies, or binge watch a new TV series. All of those help make the time pass. But be nice to yourself. Don't dismiss this as "only my leg." People won't understand how serious it is because of that, so you must know and protect yourself. How you walk the rest of your life depends on it. Never forget that.

I have to say I haven't suffered from this, but know others who have and its very painful, get welll soon

Thanks Dave, its just a pain I could do without.

I bet it is...

Freisia: I bless you all of your family. May the road rise up to meet you with a firm solid path for your feet.

Joful. that is so sweet, tank you. Are you Irish?

Yes, I have: both peroneal and achilles tendons. On both ankles, on seperate occasions. Ouch!

The most recent injury was on my right side, I was overseas walking between appointments (long walks) and didn't even realise it had gone after an ankle roll on a slightly uneven footpath. I kept walking through the pain, and of course, it kept getting worse. By the time I was in the departure lounge for that trip, I was desperate to elevate my burning, swollen foot. It was weeks before I even thought to get a diagnosis. I just thought it would calm down with a bit of rest.

It still hasn't completely healed, 2 years on. It is rather sore first thing in the morning, but warms up after a bit of gentle walking. I don't know yet if it may require surgery. I just keep flexing it gently, and I wear gel inserts in my shoes.

Before that: years earlier, while walking a big german shepherd we used to have, I was pulled off balance and (yes, ankle roll) heard a huge 'pop'. I had quite a way to return home still, by which point the skin all the way around my left ankle was turning many colours (bleeding/tearing under the skin) and it had blown up like a balloon. Looked awful. Hurt like anything.

That took months to heal, far longer than a broken bone would have! It was also difficult to find shoes that could accomodate the swelling as it got better.

P.S.: I attempted your survey in a Chrome browser on an old Mac. It's not accepting inputs for some reason, so I hope my comment here will suffice.

P.P.S.: I should have added that while the first injury on my left ankle took months to heal before I could walk smoothly, it effectively was the end of my driving a manual car. My clutch was quite tough, and using it made my left foot feel sore and twitchy. I ended up donating the car to a charity.

Ooh Ivy, that's not what I wanted to hear. I was hoping it would heal much faster than that. You certainly went through the mill with it. The pain for me was beyond description and I am absolutely terrified of it happening again, knowing that my leg is weakened now.
The snap seemed to be halfway up my leg but bruising and swelling went down to toes. . I am finding it hard to focus on anything because the fentanyl makes it hard to concentrate.
I was hoping a few weeks and I would be up and going again but your experience tells me otherwise.
I guess you drive an automatic now. My hubby is driving me at the moment but I know that will wear thin.
Thank you for taking time to respond. I have had no experience of this kind of injury before and thought I might get some tips re surgery or no surgery.
Thank you again for responding and I do hope you will be totally pain free going forward.

Ah Freisia,

I've had so many silly injuries over the years I just take it as it comes. I was one of those children that had perennially scabby knees! I played hard. Tumbled often.

I haven't required surgery on the ankles, yet. It's not always required, as your Doc may have already told you, and you may find that some good advice from a physiotherapist can help you heal and strengthen the area anew. For me, it was simply necessary to keep gently exercising the joint, rather than letting everything stiffen and shorten. A good physio will show you how.

Good luck!

P.S.: yes, I love manual, but have been on automatic since the left ankle thing. I think I've only driven a manual twice since then - someone else's car, for odd reasons.

Plenty of rest, don't overextend and wear bandages to substitute for tendons to allow healing time.

Thanks Mike. Have you had such an injury? It has to be near the worst pain I have ever experienced.
One doc is suggesting surgery but I have heard that you can do just as well without surgery.
This may not be the right place to talk about it but I wanted to check and see what thoughts people had, also I wanted to try and use the Survey app. to gauge responses and help me make a decision.

I've been fortunate Freesia but I can literally feel your pain!
