My unfinished site at http://disabledfolks.com (you can peek now) now uses the words "disabled folks" a lot. Big controversy as to whether or not to use the word "folks" when preceded by the word disabled. So...how much do you like or dislike the combination?

So..... It's a scale of 1-10 (with a 1 meaning they are terrible words to use and 10 meaning it's a super-great word usage) In addition to the number you pick, please tell me the image you are picturing when you see the two words together and if you are disabled or non-disabled.

You get two THANKS if you prefer and suggest other substitute words or a term for the same - "disabled folks". Thanks This time it is a serious Larry

Personally, I like the term. I'll give it a 9. I like that you're adding some casualness to the "disabled" connotation, without being offensive. You're also infusing it with your own personality. You sound like you're writing the same way that you speak, so it comes across as honest and natural.

I am not disabled, and can't say if I might feel differently if I had a disability, but personally I get a little fed up trying to keep up to speed on what is "politically correct" terminology from day to day.

I recently went to Africa, where I was (literally) the only white person to be found for many, many, many miles.......The locals called me "white woman." They weren't mean about it, in fact most of them used it as a way of saying "welcome".

I guess what I'm trying to say is, you don't come across with any intent to insult anyone, and you're obviously focused on this topic with respect. Keep it.

masirosis! Thanks do much for your time and thoughts. Reall appreciate everything and your African story. Larry

You really don't have a big choice, it is either folk, people or individual. I can't think of anything else. However I think folks works just fine! Vel

Thanks Vel. I agree, Larry

Nothing wrong with folks.
And your lady still hiding her legs. Need to fix that.
John

Hi John,
I will soon have a better picture. Appreciate your comments. Larry

8. Yep.

Hi Philippe,
Thanks so much. Larry

I have no problem with rating your usage of DisabledFolks as a 10 since you clearly have a site that is geared towards helping disabled people and the lighter tone to your writing voice is still respectful. I am permanently disabled and I use a cane. Two years ago I was in a wheelchair. I actually like the use of Folk because it brings the image to mind of regular everyday people. However if you were to use the word 'Handicapped' I would rate the usage of that word as -1. The H word makes me feel very resentful towards the person who uses it! Also I really like that you have used an image of a lovely middle-aged woman on your site. If you decide to use a mixture of pictures of both young and old people throughout your site it will allow a more realistic perception of folks with disabilities. I am often approached with surprise because people think only the old are commonly disabled!

LilahLee! Really appreciate your time & comments. Especially..."If you decide to use a mixture of pictures of both young and old people throughout your site it will allow a more realistic perception of folks with disabilities."
Great idea and I hope to incorporate this idea. Should you rum across an image or picture I can use please let me know. Larry

At first when I read disabled folks, I had a picture of people with gray hair, an older generation, but I also had a more likeable feeling of the term. It doesn't sound politically correct, more friendly-like if that makes any sense. When I read disabled people, I picture people of all ages and all types of disabilities. Right or wrong, that's just how I see it. But I don't care for that term as much. I would say an 8. I am not disabled as I would usually think of someone, though I have lost much of my voice due to a surgical error. Some would not see that as a disabllity, but I used my voice to earn a living. I would rather be a disabled folk, than a disabled person. I think the photo of the woman you used on your site is great. It reminds us, and me, you don;t have to be old to be disabled.

I think with your credentials you can use the word disabled without the cringe factor. These people need help and it isn't helping them to play semantics. They are now disabled, but with what you have for them they will be better able-ed to get around and do the things they want to do. That's your goal and their ultimate goal.

I like the website and the logo, I think the name fits you a 9

It doesn't offend me but some disabled persons in other areas or countries might not like it. Just keeping an open mind. I think you have a good start. Handi-capable is a good word to use! :) A 9 for the easy to navigate/read site. :D

8 I would say...it's better than disabled people or something like that.
