You don't have to buy images, you can go to free stock image websites. Check out this guide. How to Find & Add Images to Your Website The pictures in the theme previews are just examples. They do not come with the theme and you do not get to use them. It just shows what the theme looks like once you have an image there.

Setting an image as the "Featured Image" does not insert into the post. This sets it as part of the preview in the blogroll for some themes. To insert an image into your content click somewhere in the content and click "Add media" above the editor.
