Artificial Intelligence And Robotics - Fact Or Fiction?

Hi, WA Friends

Are you a fan of AI (artificial intelligence)? How about robotics? They both can provide wonderful opportunities, but I must admit, I have some concerns about how AI could be combined with robotics.

What's "Sci-Fi" now could turn into reality over the next 10 to 20 years. To understand what I mean, consider the "Robocop" and "Terminator" movie franchises.

If you believe we are nowhere near that timeframe and that I'm just a "guitar-playing whacko," check out the "Atlas" project at the robotics company Boston Dynamics for a glimpse at the future:

https://www.bostondynamics.com/atlas

Now, imagine an AI-enhanced weaponized robot that is smarter, faster, stronger, and more agile than humans. It can think autonomously and independently build continually upgraded copies of itself.

It may be bound by Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" at first but eventually adapts a more creative and self-serving interpretation.

I'll leave the rest of that thought to your imagination to come up with scenarios of what could happen next.

Let me know what you think about all this!

Hey Frank, aka "The Musician Physician" aka "The Rock Doc"

Another Great post!!!

Yeah, I hear you :)

What's to stop a machine that can learn and evolve, from learning and evolving!!!

At some point, it's bound to break the limits and restrictions placed upon it.

It's a pretty scary proposition if you stop to think about it...Do-do, do-do, do-do, do-do...Haha

Zach "The Prosperous View"

Hi, Zach

Check out the Boston Dynamics link in my post above. They're leading the robotics industry and getting millions of research dollars from the military.

I tell my wife, who is 15 years younger than me, that when I'm gone and she's running from killer robots, she'll remember my predictions. Haha! 😎

Frank 🎸

Hahaha...run baby run...lol

Yeah, I'm definitely going to check that out.

Thanks, Frank!

Wow, that's really interesting!

In the short video, they have those things doing parkour...Haha

Yeah, and remember, they’re only showing you what they want the general public to see!

Yeah, I know!

Who knows what all is going on behind the scenes!

Hi Frank, I am finally getting a chance to read this. Yes, I have read about this superman self-taught robot possibility. We can pray that the programmers are on our side-- Not likely, I suppose. Is it machine learning (ML) we are talking about? However, we have supernatural power on our side. At some point, God will say, ENOUGH little man. What say you? Now I'm going to step through the mirror and follow your link.

Hi, Donna

Yes, we are not taking about simple programming, but machine learning based on modeling neural networks.

The human brain is phenomenal, but it works by storing info and processing it both logically and abstractly.

Human emotions are data interpretations coupled with anatomic and physiologic responses.

For example, processing disturbing or fearful information and then moving the muscles in your face and vocal cords (anatomic) and excreting extra tears (physiologic) to create the emotional response of crying.

It's a gross over-simplification, but you get the point, right?

Some of these emotions are learned and others are genetically hardwired.

Robots with AI or cybernetic organisms would most likely not require emotions since they are not key to survival nor productive, by their definition.

Still, at some point we will have the ability to model virtually any animal behavior.

Frank

As someone who started his IT career programming in machine language, I can tell you there's no AI, just ultra fast processors that can handle large amounts of data and apply logic to it. That's not how thinking works and that breakthrough is a long way off. A good example is chess. A chess playing program wins by being able to examine a huge number of potential outcomes and apply weighted values (that have been worked out in advance by real chess players) to them. That's entirely different from the way a grand master plays.

Robotics is completely different but that's just engineering. I love the advances being made in that field. It's exciting times.

Hi, Phil

Thanks for commenting.

I agree with what you’re saying and that’s what makes the technology “artificial.”

Still, Google AI’s logic algorithms beat the world’s best GO player.

There’s quite a bit of research being done to model neuro networks. I can send you some of the latest research papers if you’re interested.

Eventually we will be able to process information in a whole new way and move beyond logic, like appropriate emotional responses, etc.

It’s something I will be following with great interest!

Frank

Me too, Frank. Thank you.

I think the gap between AI/ Robotics and real life is smaller and more clouded than many want to admit.

It’s down right scary.

-Mike

Hi, Mike

I agree with you.

The rate at which robotic technology and AI are advancing is concerning, in my opinion.

We could potentially lose control of the situation at some point.

Frank

I agree Frank

If you go to YouTube and type in slaughterbots, that is what I find scary…

Zoopie ,

Hi, Stephen

Yes, I have seen YouTube videos of the so-called "slaughterbots" or autonomous killer drones (AKDs).

Boston Dynamics is most advanced in commercial humanoid robotics and have a number of products for sale. They also participate in the DARPA's yearly robotic challenge for military applications. Check out the video I linked to above and you'll see how far they have come in advanced mobility algorithms.

It all has the potential to be deeply disturbing and dangerous, especially when combined with AI!

Frank

And especially when controlled by world governments who are only self-serving at best!

Jeff

A great example of this, Jeff, is atomic technology!

You're right about that too, Frank! We are getting way ahead of ourselves!

Just because we can do it doesn't automatically mean we should.

You're exactly right about that on a lot of fronts by the "mad" powers-that-be, Frank!

Jeff

Totally agree with you both. I like Siobhan’s idea to install a conscience. But perhaps start with the politicians first.
Steveoi

Yes, Stevoi! Perhaps UNinstalling all the politicians would be a GREAT first step!🤣🤣😳
