For anyone that missed the announcement WordPress version 3.6.1 was released yesterday (11th Sep 2013), addressing a few security issues.

You can install the update from y

Thanks Paul for the info

Thanks paul

OK that's fine, I'll stick with it then thanks. I just need to work out how to use the FTP client to restore it when the time comes.

Do Wordpress notify the authors of the plugins in advance? I am always concerned that if i upgrade straight away that some of the plugins won't work.

I was just about to "comment" this point. It's important especially when WordPress announces major updates (rather than minor ones) that Members check that themes and plugins have also been updated if necessary to take the WordPress update into account. You'll often find a note from conscientious developers that this has been done in the "changelog" option in plugins, for example. I often test compatibility on a siterubix site before making an update and always, always have a backup of your site before doing any update or installing anything new. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/how-to-backup-entire-wordpress-blog-have-it-auto-sent-to-a-free-dropbox-account : ) WordPress is *opensource* so anyone is free to develop anything for it and unfortunately, there's a lot of *abandonware* in the WordPress repository, where developers have ceased developing or updating their themes or plugins. Caveat Emptor! Rich.

I thought that might be the case.

What would be the best way to back up a large site, do you recommend something like Updraft Plus?

I noted that BackWPup isn't designed to back everything up and I don't know how to restore it. I just used the Tools/Import feature in the end but it didn't restore my media.

I use BackWPUp and haven't had any issues, you can select exactly what you want to include in each backup. I do a database backup daily, which covers pages and posts and a full backup weekly to cover the entire site. I've never used Updraft, so I can't say if it's any better or worse. You might want to open a separate "discussion" and see if any one else has experience with it. :) Rich.

I thought they still were going? I did see some posts from this year at forum.oiopublisher.com

Brilliant, thanks David, I did quickly check their forum but failed to spot anything recent... I've just looked again and yes, it appears that it is still supported and questions (very infrequent questions) are getting answered by the developer.

I'll shoot them an email now, thanks again,

Paul

I read somewhere a while back that it was good practice to submit the URL of EVERY article you write to Google so it has more chance of being crawled.

I've never bothered,

Hey Paul,

In your Google WebMaster account, you have the ability to submit your sitemap to Google (and you should). There is also a provision that lets you ask Google (either in Analytics or WebMaster tool - I don't remember) to crawl your site. Since all your articles will be in the sitemap, it seems like a waste of time to submit anything at all (other than the sitemap).

Best Regards,
Jim

Thanks Jim, I usually create a sitemap so Ill continue with what Im doing and will hopefully be fine. I was just making sure I wasn't missing a trick. Thanks again, Paul

Ya it`s called fetch as google in the "crawl" drop down bar. It only allows you to add pages in your own domain though- no outside articles. As for a difference.. idunno. I`m still way to fresh to tell.

Hey Paul, this is an excellent point, I always check and double-check my links as I know how irritated I get when I visit a site that has "broken" links. I also suggest installing the Pretty Links plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/pretty-link/ as recommended in the training. It not only makes ugly affiliate links more attractive, but if the same link is used multiple times on your site it means that changing or updating a link only has to be done once for it to be changed throughout your entire site. Rich.

Hi Rich, thanks for the tip about pretty-links, I'll check that out now! Good stuff
