Here is a status update on my quest for a wordpress theme ;-)

I recently tested Flat, Expound and TwentyTwelve. At this moment I'm experimenting Platform (the same as Kyle's WaysToAvoidScamsOnline.com) ... I found the name of the theme thanks to MisterWailor's tip.

And to answer another comment, I can tell you that there are subtle (annoying) features that do not allow you to switch from template without checking back how everything fit together. For example right aligned images do not display very well on Expound. As said, CleanR do not show your featured images.

So when switching to another theme, go and read all your posts to be sure that you don't break your layout.

Having tested a little bit, my best advice: don't lose too much time in selecting your theme; as JeremyWest daid, chose one without too many bells and whistles, check and keep the list of its features and if you want to switch, consider first all options, and settings, change/add the pictures and background images to better tailor it at your own and if REALLY needed, switch for one that has the same features (you can search by features inside Wordpress). But don't change too late otherwise, you'll have a lot of posts to check back ;-)

Cheers.

Good job, a very good advice to newbies.

When you are visiting other people website, if you see the theme you like. You can go to http://whatwpthemeisthat.com , (What Wordpress theme is that) type in the url of the website. It will tell you what wordpress theme that is.
If it is not a wordpress, then it can't. I will make it easier to choose when you see the real thing.

That's a pretty cool feature. You're full of great info, MisterWailor!

Thank you. I am still learning.

Wow! Awesome! Thanks.

Brilliant Mr W! Thank you

That is just "too cool" - I love it MisterWailor!!!!

Wow, thanks for that... very useful. I am stuck on themes right now too. after lengthy deliberation going around in circles, I finally just chose one from my short-list with a view to deferring a final decision till later.

Wow, thank you so much for that nugget of information!

Just pick any theme you like. You can always change theme without lost of content. It is very easy, just click add new theme, activate and you have a new theme.

Thank you!

This is an area I've been stuck at as well. I still haven't found one I'm really happy with.

It's because the ones we tend to like have been customised in one way or another. I have decided I have to start out of the box and that tweaking can come later. In fact I am thinking I should design my content first as that's "King" and then find a site with a good feel and fit later.

Some members here can help you with the customizing. Like Maksim and rob3, you can ask them for help.

Thank you, very useful to know.

If I were you I would choose the plainest theme possible for now to make it all about the content. It's easy to change your theme later if you want to dress your site up a bit.

Hi Jeremy thank for your comment. I saw your site virtualjobshome.com and I fully understand what you mean. By the way which theme is it? Thanks. Fred

TwentyTwelve apparently. Couldn't have answered you but tried MisterWailor's trick. :)

great advice, I wish i had seen that yesterday!

TwentyTwelve has buckets of ability to customise - you chose a good theme Jeremy. I note in the theme section it has many "children" so a lot of people must think so too...
