Discipline in Health and Wellbeing

This has been my personal focus for the past 4 to 6 weeks and I am now reaping the benefits. However, I am valuing it more today because yesterday my Mother's husband had a heart scare (which was why I wasn't around at WA much as I had planned for yesterday - have made up for it now this morning).

Fortunately after spending the day at hospital having tests he is now home again with medication to rest however for about a 5 hour period how I viewed my immediate family unit was challenged. I don't call him my step father because he and my mother married when Mum was in her 60s and he in his 50s. He is a large man, obese and has lost a lot of weight over the years but he is already a high risk end of the spectrum.

This has given me renewed motivation for my own health and wellbeing. Particularly because if things had of been more serious I need to be well in body, mind and spirit to be able to support my Mother.

I recently am halfway to my health and wellbeing goal so am feeling much more energetic and beginning to look better which means I get access to 50% of my existing wardrobe that I had not been able to use for the past 18 months - yay! Ladies, you know what I mean when I say I fit back into my 'skinny jeans'!

As I often say, without our health we have nothing. We aren't able to work, we aren't able to learn, we aren't able to blog!!!

What is your health and well being focus?

After my own personal health scare with Cancer, I am doing my best to not let the little things bother me, so as to keep stress levels low. I am also working on eating better, and use Pinterest quite often for recipes. This week we're experimenting with some Keto recipes. Last nights meal was a success, so it should be interesting to see how the rest of the week goes. I also need to lose some weight, I've put on about 30 lbs since going through treatment. I used the excuse of having cancer too many times to eat whatever I wanted, quite frequently it was Oreo cookies. My body has been through a lot, and it is going to take time to heal. So all I can do is take it one day at a time.

Oh thank you for sharing. Yes one day at a time. I reduced sugar too which has really helped not only weight and body weight but mental clarity too

Yep, I've already been doing my best to avoid sugar, except for the Oreo incident. We primarily use Extra Virgin Olive Oil in cooking. Had already eliminated most processed foods. Thanks for the tips!

Nice one, Jimmy's below comment is helpful too

You are sending out such an important message Fleur. Too many people abuse their bodies until a health scare hits them.

Derek

Yes I know we humans are crazy

You are so right Fleur, without our health, we have nothing and no quality of life. It is so important to look after it now before it is too late.

It so is

Good Morning Fleur,

Yes, good for you to fit into your skinny jeans again!
I am 68 now and still learning things about health. I stopped working in 1986 ( then I really started to work on my farm) and began to get interested in health-related things. I have gone through my personal food evolution and am still with it.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Nice Taetske can't believe you're 68 - spring chicken!!

Well, it is more an autumn chicken.

Fleur, at the age of 47, I am 64 now, I suffered what is called a "mild-stroke." I was 230 at the time and went on the Atkins Diet.
Doc recommended it to me.

As the moment my family diagnosed me as having a stroke, he sent me to a Neurologist and an Eye Doc. Both played a roll as I soon found out. The eye Doc looked into my eyes and he said he can tell every kind of illness from just looking at my eyes. He felt it was a mild stroke. I was treated by my brain Doc for remedies of my illness.

My daughter at the time was 8-9 years of age and talk about doing what I needed to do to heal came front and center for me.

Fleur, I need to go back some. The symptoms for me was slurring. My tongue went into a strike. Sort of numbness what seems like 1/2 of my tongue. My right hand had paralysis in my 2 inner fingers. I learned fast the uses of those fingers fast.

Up until this year I stopped playing full court basketball. This old guy is a hard head and cannot accept being old. Lols!!!

So Fleur you ask how is my health? Never been better.

I eat lots of fat an veggies and watch my sugar consumption.

Thanks for asking, yes "health" is everything.

frank

I went as low as 164 but am comfortable now at 180. Just a few weeks prior I was 192. I know the reasons and went back on the ketogenic diet, caveman diet or anything to do with eliminating carbs. I believe carbs caused my near death experience.

frank

Oh really Frank, yes I feel better on low carb and low caffeine and low everything really - moderation really is the key... I'm going back down to my 'ideal weight' but then seeing how I feel and happy to adjust if I'm too light or get too sick etc which is what used to happen years ago when I was very light

Wow, Frank, I've just read your full story - amazing - thanks for sharing - your health puts everything else into perspective. I have an 11-year-old son and he is my motivation (as well as for myself) to be fit and healthy and around for years to come especially since my father died young at age 72.

Ahhh yes Fleur, we both have similar motivations. Sometimes at least for me, it goes beyond "motivation." I saw it done before losing the weight, lol!

When I look back during that event losing weight was not that hard like I used to think, it was so dang easy, lols!

Thanks for the post, it resonated with me, big time.

frank

Pleasure yes when the motivation is high enough it is easy

Hello, Fleur.
We hope your mum's husband is feeling better. But this incident highlights the need for taking care of ourselves, doesn't it?
We set the habit of exercise many years ago (and worked as trainers too), as we knew it would pay off in the long run. It is part of our lifestyle as much as breathing, eating, and sleeping.
You are so wise to take care of YOU, for then you can help your mother and be there for her and also all the other responsibilities and commitments in life such as WA and our own websites and blogging, etc.
I know what you mean about the skinny jeans!!! Congratulations!
Wishing you all the best and we hope your mum is doing okay too.
Colette and Philip

Yes he is much better but yes it absolutely does! I agree we need to build it in like we brush our teeth, eat etc etc

Skinny jeans means I have more of my wardrobe back to use :)!!!

For me I start the morning relax with breakfast and some focus on the good thing in my life. Then check emails and on my way to train my first client, train myself again sometime for wa related work. Lunch then afternoon related work and in between wa work. Most important part of my day I take care of my food and time for personal physical activity. Plus I take supplements for my metabolic Health

Nice Tommy sounds like a great routine that works for you :)

I totally agree with you, I find this part of my life a struggle. I hate exercise, if they turned it into a sport I would eat it up, but find day to day exercise boring. But it is part of my daily routine, I dread it till I start, once I start it is easy to finish. As much as I hate exercise the alternative is much worst so that keeps me motivated. You sound like you are doing great and meeting your goals, congratulations for working so hard.
Mary

Oh I know what you mean Mary, I try not to think about it and just get on and do it!

Great points! Glad your mom's husband is home and appearing to do better.

Our health—physical, mental and spiritual—are vital for our survival in this world.

Best wishes,
Karin :)

Yes agreed it is all connected. Yes I’m grateful he is well also

It's a constant battle staying in balance Fleur!

Yes however if we adopt a daily practice it is easier to manage don’t you think?
