Do you send a private message to members if their website is broken?

Often if there is a problem with a website, a website owner may not even realise. This can be because they are:

  • so familiar with their own website they don't see it or experience it or
  • the website has developed a problem that needs fixing.

For example, a problem that a website owner doesn't know about is when comments aren't submitting correctly. Unless the person attempting to leave the comment informs the website owner then they may never know.

This is what I love about the Need Comments thread you can not only give and receive comments but if there is a problem submitting comments you can send the website owner (member) a private message to let them know - it then gives them the opportunity to get it fixed.

The reason why I send a private message is because this is site feedback note a site comment. To understand the difference between site comments and site feedback here are some helpful posts by WA members:

I know different issues have come up on my websites and lovely members have sent me a PM and then I've been able to fix it. I am always very grateful.

I'm currently wrestling with a reorganisation of my menus that I have somehow messed up so will tackle once I've had a good strong cup of tea this Sunday morning.

If I discovered a WA member's website is broken I would definitely PM them and would hope they do the same for me. Hope menu repair goes easy on you, enjoy your tea.
Mary

Thanks Mary, are yes nothing like returning to an apparent 'problem' fresh after a good night's sleep and a fresh hot, cup of tea - problem solved!!!

I tell members because they truly may not be aware. I have done it and the members appreciate it so they can address the issue right away. I would want to know if something was wrong with my site, too.

Kind Regards,
Yvette

Yes agreed, I think it also important to notify them privately via private message rather than publically via comments

Agreed. I would not want to every embarrass someone publicly. So yes, definitely PM.

Yes, I do Fleura because I want to help the member and I hope if that happens to me, someone will PM me back.

Yes agreed good karma I think too

I actually had a member text Elaine and I that our web link wasn’t working and We were very grateful. So please do tell.
Blessings,
Scarlett and Elaine

Yes it is so important

I haven't come across that but I certainly would let the member know. We are here to help each other.
Debbie

Agreed good to know we are all likeminded here on this one

I have come across the issue of being unable to submit my feedback on at least three occasions. I didn't know how to contact the owner. At the same time, I have had the same thing reported to me by friends at least 6 times. After the 3rd report I contacted Site Supported. They submitted to one of my blogs and sent a screenshot of that to me. The problem continues.

Did Site Support check it out for you?

I contact the site owner via their contact form on the website or if a WA member direct via their profile here as a PM (private message)

Yes I will send a PM. I usually send a PM as well if I spot a typo because I hope others would do the same for me.
We can all make 'spolling mistooks', even if we are using SiteContent spell check or other program, so I'd much rather know than not know.
Good question.
Thanks
Gail

Yes agreed, Gail. I use Grammarly too (after a WA member recommendation) - it's fantastic!

Absolutely, Fleur. I would sure want to know if there was something with one of my sites. The give comments an integral part of this community.

All the best,
Sue

Agreed Sue - another 'perk' of WA

Hi Fleur
Yes, I do. ;-) Like you say, there are many reasons why a website owner may not be aware of a problem, thus an extra pair of eyes are always helpful.
Sharlee (Chocolate IceCream)

Yes absolutely, I'm always grateful to know if something isn't working as it should

Thanks so much for this info, Fleur. I haven't had the experience of knowing if something is broken, but really like your idea of letting the owner of the site know via PM. Carol

Yes it is very helpful and I was curious if everyone else here felt the same
