Waiting For The Plane Home

Today is my day to return home. I'm waiting in the Juneau airport for my plane. It's raining, and I have my fingers crossed that there won't be too much fog to fly. I'm ready to get back to my own house and sweet kitty.

Photo is of my childhood home in Old Lyme, CT. Couldn't get it all on there, but there is enough to give the idea. It was interesting and nostalgic to revisit,

Back to Camden, Maine, for the rest of this story. While staying in the little house in Camden, we started our own travel tradition. We are all good cribbage players, so we played three or four three-handed games nearly every night.

Usually, in three games we'd each win one; then we'd play a fourth to establish the champion for the night. We continued the tradition in our Winthrop B & B (outside Boston) for our last two nights. It's a good way to unwind at the end of the day.

On the way to Boston, we stopped for one night at a beautiful place outside Kennebunk. We also visited Kennebunkport and gawked at the mansions on the water.

Of course, we did our last bit of shopping, and found another Mexican restaurant. It was also good, but the service was very slow, and Tom and I stuffed ourselves on some excellent guacamole and chips and then couldn't eat all our dinner. Chrissy does much better -- she orders what she can eat.

I don't believe I mentioned our drive to Bar Harbor, where we motored up Cadillac Mountain. It is the first place where you can see the sunrise in the United States. We shopped a bit in the many little tempting shops there, just to say we did it.

We had two GPSs on the trip with us. Somehow neither one seemed to know where we were, at least part of the time. Once, when they were both on, the two of them started talking at once, giving two different sets of directions.

Then, when we headed to Boston, we discovered that the Suburban we were renting had a really good built-in GPS with a screen on the dash large enough to read. Too bad we didn't find it on the first day instead of at the end of the trip!

As I could read the screen better than Chrissy, even though I was in the back seat, I watched the GPS and gave Tom cues. Once he said, "For the first time, I have to say that I am glad to have a back seat driver."

We turned the car in Monday about noon and took a cab to the Boston Aquarium, where we boarded a trolley for a tour of the city. The driver/tour guide was very knowledgeable as he pointed out historic landmarks.

I was disappointed that we couldn't do the cat cafe, because it had closed. I did talk to the owner, who said that the closure disappointed her as well, but it had gotten too expensive. Too bad -- I had looked forward to the visit.

After the Boston tour, we took a little ferry back to Winthrop, and were deposited about two blocks from the B & B. Much better than fighting city traffic! The other passengers appeared to be all "regulars" who worked in the city and rode the ferry home. Nice idea!

On our last night in Winthrop, we walked to a sushi restaurant about three blocks away. Recommended by our host, we had to agree with his assessment. The food was absolutely excellent. They had lobster on the menu, and of course Tom had to get it one last time.

I thoroughly enjoyed their sushi, while Chris had tempura shrimp. First class!

I did not enjoy the plane trip home, though all went smoothly. We got up at 5:00, which would be 1:00 Alaska time. I didn't arrive in Juneau until 8:00 last night. Sleep on a good bed at my son's house was welcome.

Now I go home in an hour. It was raining when I got to the airport, but now the rain has stopped and the clouds have lifted a fit. If it holds for an hour, I'll make it home. What an excellent adventure...

Now it's time to focus on Month Five of the SAC challenge. My battery is recharged and I am ready to go.

P.S. Made it home. It was a little foggy near Gustavus, but the pilot found the runway under the fog and we landed safely.

It was a wonderful trip, and am most thankful for the friends who took me along. As this trip is paybacks for a trip I took with my friends many years ago, it was really extra-special. Sometimes your rewards really can surprise you.
